Rinaldi Yamaha‰Ûªs Josh Coppins, finished in 2nd place overall with 7-4-4 results although the Kiwi wasn't that happy with his riding. Josh had it tough for the opening Moto due to a crash while in 2nd place and was consistent in the other two races. Fellow Rinaldi Yamaha rider David Philippaerts won with a consistent 2-1-3 results from the three motos. KTM rider Jonathan Barragan was a little unlucky, winning two of the motos but DNF‰Ûªing the second moto of the day after problem with the bike - he was 3rd. The Spanish rider looked strong all weekend. Barragan will now race two Spanish championship races before the first Grand Prix in Valkenswaard on April 6. "I don't like this place really," Coppins said. "This was my best Mantova ever. I finished 2nd last year, but missed out badly in the Tennis Match, so this year I finished 2nd in that also. I didn't really like the track and had to come back from 20th in Moto 1 after crashing." In front of a large crowd and under perfect weather conditions Italian favorite Philippaerts looked solid all day long and proved that the Rinaldi Yamaha team will once again be a major force in the World MX1 motocross championships. "The bike is working really well and it has been my dream to win this race," Philippaerts said. "To do it with the Rinaldi team makes it perfect for me. I felt really in good control and I didn't have any problems the whole day." The feeling of well-being currently in the set-up is echoed by Co-ordinator ‰Û÷Mino‰Ûª Raspanti. "Even though we are just at the start of the year we already feel strong as a team and David is an easy guy to work with; he is always kind and professional," he remarked. "We did some engine and suspension testing but we have not made any big changes to the bike compared to last year, our work was mainly focussed on adapting the YZ450FM to suit his style and to get him comfortable," he further added. Whilst the expectation of regaining Yamaha‰Ûªs MX1-GP crown falls mainly in the lap of team-mate Josh Coppins, Raspanti believes that Philippaerts is capable of a few surprises: "We believe that David is one of the fastest riders in MX1 but he still needs some more experience. He is only 24 and potentially has a good career ahead of him. His strengths as a rider are his skills on the bike, his strong character and his fighting spirit. We expect a forward step in 2008 and we will support him totally to help achieve that." Tanel Leok had a consistent weekend also, winning the Tennis Match (which is a one on one competition until only two riders survive the final) ahead of Josh Coppins. Leok went 20-8-2 in the three motos for 7th. Tommy Searle won the MX2 Tennis Match ahead of Gautier Paulin. Searle had looked a good shot to battle with the MX1 riders after a strong Saturday, but poor starts robbed him of doing the business in the three motos. With Antonio Cairoli not racing in Mantova due to (saying) he wasn't ready for the Mantova International Searle came in as the MX2 favorite and looked just that all weekend long. "I felt good all weekend," Searle said. "I was just back from America and we trained really well there. I felt good on Saturday, but Sunday my starts were not that great. I am happy though, my lap times were good and I felt really good." Some of the riders who suffered problems on Sunday were Suzuki factory rider Ken De Dycker who crashed during the Tennis Match and was ruled out for the rest of the weekend. Kawasaki rider Kevin Strijbos suffering from an injured shoulder did well considering he struggled to lift his shoulder over his head on Saturday morning. Moto 1 results:
