World-class Trials event to attract large number of visitors to Victoria

Posted:

Central Victoria is set to host a world-class motorcycle event in May 2012 that organisers say will bring more than 5000 visitors to the Victorian region.

On May 26-27, Maldon will hold two rounds of the World Trials Championships (WTC), the first time Australia will have hosted the event.

Chairman of the Moto Trials commission for Motorcycling Australia Colin Scott said he had been campaigning for years to bring the event to Australia.

Scott is president of the Bendigo-based Moto Trials club, which has about 50 members.

Moto Trials ‰ÛÒ most popular in Europe, where it originated ‰ÛÒ is a sport in which riders negotiate large obstacles within a marked section, testing their ability to control the bike while balancing their body weight.

Scott said the WTC was the grand prix of Moto Trials, with 13 rounds held each year in several countries.

In 2012 rounds three and four of the championship will be held at Mt Tarrengower, with two additional man-made sections in Maldon.

"On the western slopes of Mt Tarrengower there are some huge areas of boulders and deep ravines that are rock lined, which will be quite challenging for riders," Scott said.

"Then the bonus is that Maldon is quite a notable tourist village, and that just adds to the whole ambience of the event. Traditionally these events in Europe are staged from within small towns or villages usually in an alpine region and because of the nature of this sport, it means that spectators can get right up close to the action."

Scott said 50 riders, including about six Australians, would compete across three levels: world champion, junior and youth.

"We expect up to 5000 spectators each day... so the commercial value to central Victoria is enormous.'

Four-time world champion Toni Bou of Spain will compete, and Scott said he wouldn't be threatened by any Australian riders.

"The level that these international riders are at is very high. We have no one that could be competitive.

"But that's why we wanted to secure the event; we're trying to enthuse our younger riders."
