Woods Point area update

Posted:

Here is an update from the always helful and freindly Leading Senior Constable Kenneth Dwight from the Woods Point Police Station in Victoria. "Hello once again, well the New Year is upon us and I have plenty of riders and drivers out in the Woods Point Area enjoying our country. I am happy to report that most tracks are open for business up here but I do have a couple of warnings for you. I know you might think I am preaching to the converted however I am hope that any new comers to the sport may read this and take it to heart. Some of you may be aware of Abbots Link Track, Clarke Spur Track and Abbots Creek Track and the area known as Brooklyn where they come together at the Goulburn River. These tracks are extremely steep, muddy and slippery at the moment, they have been chewed up by continuous hard use by 4WD groups and no repair work has been done on them. I can understand DSE's reluctance to do this work as it does not last long until someone comes along and wrecks it again. In the last month I and colleagues from Jamieson have had to organise rescues of single vehicles stuck in this area and their passengers, admitingly all were novice drivers using inappropriate vehicles for the terrain, who had trouble even reading a map. My job is to try and ensure the safety of everyone who uses this country and I have advised DSE that the preferred position of Victoria Police is to have these tracks closed to public use. If this cannot be achieved then appropriate warning signs must be displayed and sanctions placed on people inappropriately equipped for the track. I understand that the majority of users are responsible and try to use the tracks leaving as little damage as possible. I know you enjoy the challenge of these drives but the nature of the wheels and tyres people are using these days is one of the factors damaging the tracks in these places, when one of these novices drivers comes along they have no hope and as is usually the case they have not told anyone they are going there. My other track warning is that there is a large tree across Old Coach Road that is completely blocking the track. Due to a lack of money DSE won't be clearing it in the short term so be careful out there. Trail Bike Riders, once again I have to book a number of riders for unregistered bikes, including a number of quad bikes. These machines are treated as a motor vehicle and as such must be registered for use and the rider must have a motor vehicle driver's licence to operate the vehicle. It is very difficult to get registration for theses vehicle and you will not get it for normal road use. Anyone found riding one in a camp ground or on a track or road will be charged for the appropriate offences fetching fines of over $500 for each offence. The trail Bike riders have been keeping our ambulance girls particularly busy as well as myself over the last few months with a number of serious falls occurring on remote tracks, all have required Air Ambulance assistance and although you are in good hands with our girls you have to be more safety conscious on the tracks, it is not just inexperienced riders hurting themselves and the last job I want is to be doing Coroners Reports on you guys. The bush is here to be enjoyed but remember it will kill you if you loose concentration. Easter and more long weekends are coming up so remember come to Woods Point for fun not a funeral."
