WEM Returns to Australian Motocross Championship as New Promoter for 2027

Posted:

Williams Event Management will return as promoter of the Australian Motocross Championship in 2027, taking over the commercial rights to ProMX and bringing former MX Nationals promoter Kevin Williams back to the helm of the national series.

Australian motocross is set for another major change in 2027, with Williams Event Management (WEM) regaining the commercial rights to the Australian Motocross Championship, currently known as ProMX.

The move sees the company owned by long-time motocross administrator and promoter Kevin Williams return to the national championship it previously managed for more than two decades, raising questions about whether the ProMX branding will remain or if a return to the familiar MX Nationals identity could be on the horizon.

Effective immediately, WEM will take responsibility for all operational, media, marketing, fixturing and financial aspects of the championship as it prepares for a new era beginning in 2027.

Motocross has long been at the core of WEM’s business. The company promoted the Australian Motocross Championship from 1997 through to 2020, when the series was widely known as the MX Nationals. During that period, the championship expanded significantly, developing a professional multi-class structure that included dedicated categories for women and emerging junior riders.

Six years after stepping away from the championship, Williams said he was looking forward to returning to the national scene.

“We’re excited to be back to lead the next chapter of the Australian Motocross Championship,” Williams said.

While noting he has spent less time at Australian motocross events in recent years, Williams pointed out that he has remained heavily involved in the sport through Australian Supercross, the FIM Motocross Commission and MXGP.

Looking ahead, he said WEM’s focus would be on building a sustainable future for the championship.

“Our focus is firmly on the future,” Williams explained. “A strong commercial model is critical to the long-term sustainability of the championship, and we’ll be focused on growing crowds and building the championship’s exposure globally.”

Williams also revealed that planning for next season is already well underway.

“We’re already well advanced with our plans for 2027, with the championship direction and calendar to be announced in the first week of November.”

Motorcycling Australia CEO Peter Doyle welcomed the appointment, pointing to WEM’s extensive history with the championship and its experience in delivering major motorsport events.

“WEM’s long history with the Australian Motocross Championship speaks for itself,” Doyle said. “Over three decades, WEM worked tirelessly to elevate the stature of the championship to the extent that it was the envy of many other domestic series around the globe.”

Doyle believes that experience will be valuable as WEM takes control of the championship’s future direction.

“That guile and experience counts for a lot, not only in terms of event management but WEM will also be putting a magnifying glass over all aspects of the championship to make it the best possible product it can,” he said.

Describing the move as the beginning of a new chapter, Doyle added: “A new era of ProMX has arrived, and I am excited to see it all play out in 2027 and beyond.”

With WEM back at the helm of Australian motocross for the first time since 2020, attention will now turn to the first week of November, when details of the 2027 championship structure and calendar are expected to be revealed.
