WA supermoto racers to sweat it out in dash for cash this Sunday

Round two of the Supermoto Club of WA‰Ûªs summer series will be held this Sunday, February 17, in what is expected to be extremely testing conditions. Perth is in the grip of a heatwave, with temperatures reaching the high 30s each day this week. Sunday is forecast to be 39C so it will truly be survival of the fittest when the riders pull their leathers on and set out to do battle - which will include a feature race at the end of the day with $500 prize money up for grabs. The feature race is aimed at giving every racer on the day the chance to pick up some cash, which is split among the top six finishers in the feature race, which has 12 riders. The 12-rider field in the feature race is made up of the top six A-graders on the day and the top six B-graders and is run in a reverse-grid format. That means the 6th fastest B-grader is on pole position for the feature race and the fastest A-grader starts at the back of the pack. Prior to the feature race - which does not carry any points towards the championship - there will be three points-carrying A-grade races, three B-grade races and juniors. The potential for carnage in the feature race as the A-graders catch and pass the B-graders is obvious but at round one of the summer series, sponsored by Franzone TM, Bridgestone and Bel-Ray, thankfully there were no serious incidents. The feature race also gives fast A-graders who finished mid-pack during the earlier races to be elevated up the grid and give it one last shot - and the prize money offers some real motivation. Such was the case with supermoto newcomer, A-grade motocrosser Jye Schaap (Honda), who came close to winning the feature race at the last round after finishing fourth overall in the earlier A-grade races. But the man to beat in WA supermoto is David Gellatly (KTM), who won all three A-grade races in round one, then carved his way through the pack in the eight-lap feature race. Schaap and Gellatly had a great battle in the feature race and swapped positions a couple of times before Gellatly went on to take the win by just 2.6 seconds. Last year, Gellatly also contested the national championships, shuttling between WA and the Eastern States, and got onto the podium at one round, in addition to some solid finishes. Another hard-charger who will be looking for a win on Sunday will be 2007 WA winter series champion Brett Stewart (TM), who came sixth overall at round one after a day he would rather forget that included a couple of crashes. Liam Robertson (Yamaha), Michel Drean (Honda) and Jason Taylor (Husqvarna) are the other A-graders who will be at the pointy end of the field. In the B-grades, Dave Holden (KTM) Marc ‰ÛÏKing of the B-grades‰Û
