Vic Road Race Championships take over the Island

Posted:

Competitors were greeted with great weather for the second round of the Peter Stevens Motorcycles Victorian Road Race Championships at Phillip Island on the weekend. More than 250 entries competed for championship points over 15 classes.

Spectators were treated to some great racing with the first round of the Australian F1 Sidecar Championships also run at Phillip Island. Queenslanders Paul Jacobs and Steve Bonney came out on top from New South Welshmen Jeff Brown (APE Motorcycles) and Darren Sheldrick over the weekend. The next round is at Winton on 17-18 July.

The feature race of the weekend was the 59th Harvie Wiltshire Memorial Trophy Race.

15 starters fronted the lights for the race, with favorite Alistair Maxwell withdrawing before the start with machine problems.

Michael McMillan (Honda CBR1000RR) and Ed Miller (Suzuki GSXR1000) battled the whole way to the chequered flag with the lead changing several times a lap. Michael McMillan would lead onto the front straight most laps after passing Ed Miller into MG corner but Ed‰Ûªs faster straight-line speed would see him overtake Michael over the start-line.

By lap 7 Michael had eked out a small gap before the last corner and was able to hold off Ed into turn one. Riding hard Michael tried to open up the gap enough to prevent Ed passing before the line on the 10th and final lap.

Ed was not done yet and moved up onto the tail of Michael‰Ûªs machine entering the final corner and was able to pass Michael nearing the line to take out the 59th Harvie and add his name to the trophy that has some of Australia‰Ûªs greatest Road Racers already on it.

In the Vic Titles, round winners were Daniel Roos (250 Proddy), Ian DeBoer (Clubsport), Michael Halliday-B Select Kilsyth (Supermodified 400), Chas Hern (Stock 400), Mark Lamont-Ozynob/Bridgestone (Twin Sprint), Stephen Liddicoat (BEARs), Michael McMillan (Open +500cc), John Orchard (Superstock 1000), Matthew Walters (Superstock 600), Darren Sciberras- Smart Square Pty Ltd (Supersport), Adrian Nestorovic (Supersport C), Darren Sciberras- Smart Square Pty Ltd (Supersport B), Steve Tozer-Mastercoat/Gas Honda Racing (Superbike), Andrew Ord-Ord‰Ûªs Motorcycles (Superbike B), Liam Whilta (Superbike C), Joel Taylor (125 GP), Joel Taylor-BRP Racing (125 GP C), Ben Reid-KLS Australia (250 GP), Hudson Pitt (Junior 150), Troy Geunther (Junior 70 & Metrakit 70), Michael Lockart- EPL International/Caesar Stone (Junior 80), Luke Mitchell-Metrakit Australia (Metrakit 80), Lee Frankland- Armstrongs Of Parkdale (Pre-Modern F1), Rob Klye (Pre-Modern F2), Simon Chapman-Race Bike Services (Thunderbike) & Darryl Rayner & Peter Cumming (National Cup F2 Sidecar).
