Under 19’S poised for final showdown at Coolum

Posted:

2007 is the first year that the Yamaha Under 19 Australian Motocross Championship has been run and the series has been a resounding success. From the beginning of the championship, the U/19's have commanded attention and credibility by displaying some of the highest levels of dedication in the championship. In order to allow the Australian Women's Motocross Championship and the Yamaha MX Development Series to perform 1 round each alongside the two premier classes, the U/19's championship was suspended for rounds 6, 7 and 8. During that time, the top 4 U/19 riders were awarded 'wild card' entries into the Pro-Lites Class to see how they performed at the higher level. They did not disappoint. Series leader Brendan Harrison of Serco Yamaha, 2nd placed KTM's Todd Waters, 3rd placed Dean Ferris on Yamaha and 4th placed Kirk Gibbs from Team 07 Yamaha all exceeded expectations. The highlights of the young riders' promotion included a win by Waters in Moto 1 at Round 6 at Toowoomba and a 2nd by Dean Ferris in Moto 2. In an outstanding performance, Waters came 2nd overall on the day and went on to take 3rd overall at Round 7. Kirk Gibbs also stepped up, placing 2nd overall at Round 8 at Wonthaggi. Lawson Bopping, the Shift Motul Suzuki up-and-comer, has been pushing the front-runners throughout the series and last week in Lakes proved that he has what it takes when he took out Round 9 with a 1st in Moto 1 and a 2nd in Moto 2. Kevin Williams of Williams Event Management said he has been delighted with the level of professionalism of the Under 19 Class and that the results achieved have been very impressive. "Its great to see the success of the new championship class. It's been 3 years in the making and the National Cup was the beginning. Today we see this Under 19 class producing true champions of the future." Unlike the Pro-Opens and Pro-Lites championship, the Under 19's Class has not yet been won. A small margin separates the leaders which makes Sunday's racing all the more exciting. Harrison is in front by only 13 points, and the 32 point gap between Waters in 2nd and Ferris in 3rd is not impossible to bridge. At the final round at Coolum this Sunday, the hype is undoubtedly increased with number 1 spot still up for grabs. Lap times will be challenged and tomorrow's stars will be pushed as they go head to head in the battle to be named 2007 champion. Current standings are:
1. B Harrison 259
2. T Waters 246
3. D Ferris 214
4. K Gibbs 212
5. L Bopping 191
