Maximus Purvis’ tough 2025 campaign continued at Traralgon, where a promising start ended in frustration after a heavy crash in race two forced him out of the round and left his immediate racing future uncertain.

Maximus Purvis’s 2025 ProMX Championship campaign has taken another blow, with the tough New Zealander crashing out of the second MX1 moto at Traralgon just as he was starting to regain form after a challenging and injury-disrupted start to the season.

After missing round two at Appin due to a crash that left him with lingering pain beneath his knee, the reigning New Zealand Champion had shown signs of progress. Despite being cleared of fractures, the injury severely limited his riding and training in the lead-up to round three at Gillman. There, he battled through discomfort to post a gritty ninth-place finish — a respectable result given the circumstances.

“It wasn’t an easy weekend for me as my leg was still pretty sore,” Purvis said after Gillman. “I had some X-rays which cleared any bone issues, but I still have some tenderness just under my knee, so I had to be careful and just try and get through the weekend.”

Determined to return to form, Purvis used the four-week break before Traralgon to focus on rehab and preparation, and he arrived at round five feeling closer to full fitness. The day began positively, with Purvis qualifying third and riding strongly in the opening moto to match his best result of the season with a third-place finish.

However, disaster struck in race two. After another solid start and running inside the top five, Purvis lost control coming off a hilltop section and was violently thrown from his YZ450F into the embankment. The impact left him sore and shaken, and he returned slowly to the CDR Yamaha garage, where he was assessed by the team.

“I’m pretty sore now,” Purvis admitted after the crash. “I got sideways as I came off the drop away and then I landed in some soft stuff that just sent me sideways. I hit pretty hard and bent the bike up, so I’ll get checked out during the week and see what comes back and how I feel.”

He will undergo further scans in the coming days to determine the extent of any new injuries and when he may be able to return to racing. With the ProMX Championship now at its halfway point, Purvis’s focus will once again turn to recovery as he works to salvage what has been a rollercoaster season.
