Tom McCormack set to tackle NZ’s toughest

Byron Bay dirt bike racer, Tom McCormack, will jet across the Tasman at the end of the month to contest three of New Zealand's most challenging races, kicking off his trip with the Maramarua 3-Day Enduro (M3DE) on December 3rd to 5th.

McCormack, who rides for Yamaha Australia, will also line up for the first round of the National Enduro Championship and the third round of the GNCC series, being held in the pine forest of Waimiha December 11th and 12th.

The 17-year-old said he was excited to finally have the opportunity to race overseas.

"I'm going mainly for experience, I'm trying to get as much as I can before next season, so I can have a chance at winning the Australian title in the Champiopnship E1 Class," McCormack said.

"I'm really motivated to get over there and try my hardest and hopefully come away with a good result.

"The New Zealand riders are pretty quick, so my main aim is to go over and have a lot of fun and try to learn as much as I can.

"The conditions will likely be extreme, I've been told it'll either be really wet or really dry.

"There's apparently a lot of roots in the pine forests, which will make it tough if it rains, as they get really slippery."

McCormack said he would be riding a YZ250F in the New Zealand events, as he had for throughout the 2010 season.

"It's an awesome bike. I've been riding it all year and I can't fault it. I'm really comfortable on it and love riding it,' he said.

McCormack said he had also been trying his hand on a big-bore YZ450F.

He raced the 480cc machine at the final round of the Go Girl Series held at Kilcoy yesterday and finished second in the Senior Unlimited Support Class.

"I'm happy with the result. I just went there and had a bit of fun. The track was unreal, the club did an awesome job as always," he said.

"Yamaha lent the big-bore bike so I could trial it as I'm considering riding a YZ450F in Queensland races next year, because the tracks are mostly suited to a bigger bike.

"Yamaha also wanted me to help develop the big-bore for their Championship E3 rider to campaign next season.

"We're really happy with the modifications we've made to make the bike more rideable.

"I've really enjoyed riding it and I am faster on it than my YZ250F.

"So, I'm pretty sure I'll be on a YZ450F for the Queensland races next year to give me the best chance at winning the Queensland enduro title.

"But I'll still be on my YZ250F in the national events, as I want to win the E1 class."

McCormack said he would be racing the big-bore YZ450F in the final two Queensland races of the year: the last rounds of the Yamaha Sprint Cross-Country Series and Pony Express Series being held at Ironpot (near Kingaroy) on November 13th and 14th.
