Toby Price. Planes, Volcanos and automobiles

It’s been an amazing start to the year for Toby Price, with a new title under his belt, a new team, new clothing sponsor, new business venture, international trip being just the tip of the ice berg for this laid back star of the bush.

Toby is the kind of guy you love to talk to, easy going, well spoken and always with a story to tell, as we found out last week when we caught up with him to get a report on his year so far:

Q: Hey Toby, so a massive year to date lets start from the top, you have a new bike and team this year?

Toby Price: Yeah, KTM is the new team and its great. I made the switch for this season and the guys have really welcomed me onboard and, so far we have had a great start to the year?

Q: Why the switch?

Toby Price: I must say last year with Kawasaki we won the 2009 AORC outright title which was awesome. This year though, KTM offered me a great package and opportunities to travel more in Australia and overeas. So I jumped at the chance.

Ive already done some testing with KTM for the Fink race in Alice which was awesome and recently just got back from Portugal.

Q: We hear that was an eventful trip from start to finish then?

Toby Price: If it could all go wrong in one trip it did! From being late for the flight out to sitting there just after takeoff and watching the hostess grab the chair for fear of her life as the plane made some strange sounds, I knew I was in for a trip to remember. I’m sitting there thinking: this thing [plane] is going down, if the hostess is panicking it can’t be good! [laughs]

Q: So you finally hit terra firm safely in Portugal then?

Toby Price: Well, the plane touched down okay but it wasn’t over yet. I got there late and the hire car co. was closing down and the paper work from Australia was wrong, so I was really lucky to get a car. Then they tell me there is no GPS to hire.!

I’ve never stepped foot in the country, cant speak the local dialect and all I have now is an old-school map. Let’s just say that a 60min trip took 4 hours!

Q: So you rode the third and fourth rounds of the WEC, how did you get on?

Toby Price: It was awesome. I really got a taste of how they do things in Europe and I definitely feel I am capable of mixing up over there. I was doing great on all three days, featuring consistently in the top 5 until bike issues let me down. I am hoping that I get another chance over there for sure.

Q: How were the locals over there supportive?

Toby Price: I was riding through a small village to the next test and I see in the distance (fastly approaching) an old lady with one of those old garden tools [ a hoe], Im thinking she’s come out to cheer us on. Nope. She takes a slash at me with this thing and just about knocked me off the bike!

Q: Any other dramas to report it seems like theres more to come?

Toby Price: Yep you’re right [laughs]. So after racing I get food poisoning for a couple of days, and I’m thinking I just wanna go home, then mother nature steps in via this massive volcano, stranding me in Portugal for days and days. I did make it back for the next AORC round in time, but it was cancelled due to all the rain up that way.

Q: So, as the season gets on with things back in Australia how are you feeling?

Toby Price: It’s been a dream come true for me so far this year for sure. I am pumped about the team and how its all travelling. I have just got in involved in a new clothing store in Singleton called Dirty Threads.

Q: Wow, tell us a bit about that.

Toby Price: I wanted to have something behind me after racing and this fitted nicely. [no pun intended] I have my new clothing sponsor Rampant in there, they have some amazing stuff out right now, its different and people are digging it. We also have a bunch of other great labels in there, so it’s got something for everyone. Im excited about it and try and get in there as much as possible when time permits.

Q: It sounds like you have it all happening right now and we look forward to following your progress for the remainder of the season on and off the bike. Thanks for your time today.

Toby Price: My pleasure, thanks for the chat.
