They are coming from far and wide

Posted:

The 2005 Day's Tyre and Brake Centre Australian Motor Cycle Long Track Championships to be staged at the Bathurst Showground this Saturday (November 5) has attracted another huge entry of riders, some coming from as far a field as Perth and Townsville. A total of 120 riders have entered for the seven championship classes for the solos and with many entering more than one class there will be 173 bikes chasing glory in those seven classes. There are four riders who have each set themselves the onerous task of contesting four classes - veteran Paul Caslick of the Hunter Motor Cycle Club, Tim Tyrrell of the Panorama Motor Cycle Club, Luke Johnson another local who is a member of the Cowra Motor Cycle Club and the brilliant Mildura teenager from Team Kawasaki, Josh Waters. If they manage to ride up to expectations and qualify for the final in all classes they will finish up completing over 60 laps at speed around the 800 metre Bathurst Showground track from their practice session, three heats and final in each class. All the two wheel title showdowns will culminate in a sudden death four lap final as entries have been enough to necessitate either two or three heats in each round. The quality and quantity of the line-up in most classes will ensure some red-hot action in the heats as only the top 12 scorers from the heats will earn a start in the final which will likely mean that some good performers miss out on contesting the decider. The championships for both the speedway and dirt track sidecars have attracted eight teams with hard fought finals likely among the competitors who are coming from as far away as Perth, Mildura and Brisbane. The speedway class includes four riders who have previously been winners at Bathurst - former Australian Championship winners in this class Darrin Treloar of Sydney, Jim-Bob Turner of Tamworth and Perth based Russell Mitchell who is riding a Newcastle bike, and Chris Pym. A very evenly balanced field in the dirt track class should also ensure very close competition. In addition to the championship classes 39 junior riders have entered for the four junior support classes which will each be contested over four rounds. Junior racing in previous years has produced not only very keenly contested and close racing, but also shown off the talents of some fine up-and-coming talents who have been earmarked as ones to watch for the future. Classic sliders and the popular Harley / British Twin class will also be part of the support events on what will be a 96 race program.
