The Iconic Coolum Pines Motocross Track To Go Out With A Bang

The final round of the 2023 ProMX Championship in August will be the last meeting for the iconic Coolum Pines Motocross Track.

After two decades as Australia’s premier motocross venue, hosting some of the nation’s biggest events, the Coolum Pines Motocross Club nestled in the Pine trees off Quanda Road, is set to close at the end of 2023 and doesn’t plan on going quietly into the night with a host of major races scheduled in a huge final year.

The venue has attracted thousands of visitors over the years and had a huge impact on the local economy as riders, teams, and families flock to the popular Sunshine Coast venue, but the ever-enthusiastic club and their band of supporters will celebrate the final year of operation with a range of local, state and national events to signify the end of an era.

The year begins this month with the opening round of the Sunshine State Motocross Series, the Queensland Championships are planned for the middle of the year, while the final round of the ProMX (Australian Motocross Championship) is in August, with the gates closed for the final time later in the year as council reclaims the land for further industrial use.

Club President Matt Holliday says “whilst relocating the club looks promising at the moment, there are still a lot of hurdles to overcome to allow it to move forward. Council approvals and government funding are our biggest concerns at the moment, so we are hoping for a smooth transition.

The iconic venue has produced some of the best riders in the world, with Sunshine Coast residents Jett and Hunter Lawrence, who now race at the highest levels in the USA raking in millions of dollars, cut their teeth as junior riders on the challenging black sand circuit. The close proximity to airports, the beach, plenty of accommodation as well as the Sunshine Coast location make it a desired destination for all riders and the track has proven to be the most popular in Australia.

“The club has been in action for over 20 years now and while it is sad that we will be closing this venue down at the end of the year, we are excited to bring three major events to Coolum in our final year and showcase just how good the venue, club, and track facilities are,” stated club President, Matt Holliday. “Our members and supporters are gearing up for a final massive year and we urge local businesses and spectators to get behind us in what will be a huge celebration of the iconic venue.

“Coolum Pines MX has been a breeding ground for all levels of riders over the years with kids as young as four starting on a dirt bike for the very first time to the most experienced of professional riders taking on a track that demands respect. The venue has provided a safe, friendly, and controlled environment for all dirt bike riders and is an essential venue in the community in keeping riders off the streets and a place where they can ride.”

Preparations are in the final stages as the opening round of the long-running and popular Sunshine State Motocross Series roars to life on February 18 and 19. Over 500 riders are expected to converge on the Coolum Pines circuit to start the 2023 racing season.

“The Sunshine State Series is the backbone of motocross in Queensland and the Coolum Club has always thrown its support behind it,” Holiday continued. “It caters to a wide range of riders and we also plan of having plenty of fun, activities, and promotions happening off the track so we hope a big roll-up of spectators turn up and enjoy so high-quality racing and a fun family day,” Holliday concluded.

The deep dark sand of Coolum always started the day looking dreamy but had its challenges as the day wore on and tested riders from Pro riders to juniors.
