The Emergency Department – Round 9 – Indianapolis Supercross

Another round of Supercross, another injury for Pro Circuit. It’s becoming an all-too-familiar trend for team owner Mitch Payton. In a sport as tough as Supercross, the Pro Circuit Kawasaki team has experienced plenty of highs—but lately, the lows have been piling up, especially when it comes to injuries.

At Daytona, both Cameron McAdoo and Levi Kitchen saw their Supercross seasons come to an abrupt end. One suffered an ACL tear that he had been managing since the start of the season, while the other went over the bars in the Main Event, resulting in multiple fractures that will keep him sidelined for weeks.

What’s behind this unrelenting string of injuries for the Pro Circuit team? Is it simply the Motocross Gods and Lady Luck evening the score after years of dominance? Or is there something deeper at play? Could it be training methods, a lack of physical preparation for long-term durability, or even the immense pressure to win that weighs on every rider who walks out of the team truck, surrounded by walls lined with championship plates? Whatever the reason, something has to change. A team can’t start a season with four or five riders and expect only one—maybe two—to make it to the end of Supercross. That’s not a formula for success.

Meanwhile, Chase Sexton continues to defy expectations by remaining injury-free. His physical makeup may hold the key. Unlike most modern motocross athletes—who focus on cardio and power-to-weight efficiency—Sexton carries a bulkier, more muscular frame. Could that extra muscle mass be what’s helping him avoid serious injuries? Strength, stability, and mobility all play a role in injury prevention, and he likely prioritises those aspects in his training. But does that extra weight also contribute to his struggles with bike setup? Could it be limiting his ability to override the bike beyond its setup tolerance? It’s a tough puzzle to solve. At some point, you’d expect Sexton to iron out his mistakes—but will it be too late to catch Cooper Webb, who gains confidence with each passing week and every point he adds to his championship lead?
