Jett Lawrence is on a winning run that has us thinking he might be getting the baton passed to him from the previous generation

The baton may have been passed. Jett Lawrence is building into the 2024 Supercross season. Three wins in a row in the last three rounds have seen him establish himself clearly at the front of the field.

But it’s not just that he has won three races in a row. It’s the manner that he has done it that leads you to the conclusion of the baton being passed.

After a mistake in Arlington left him off the podium. A bounce-back win in Daytona where he overcame both Eli Tomac and Defending Champion Chase Sexton on a very difficult and deteriorating track was an impressive statement.

This was backed up with a clinical display in Alabama over the late race surging specialist Cooper Webb, who seemed powerless to gain any ground on Jett at any point in that main event.

But maybe the most impressive of the three wins was this last race in Indianapolis. A Triple crown format that has proven to be difficult for all riders to master, but particularly Jett Lawrence. But this is the coming-of-age story for Jett Lawrence in 2024. One that shows he is learning the ways of the 450 class with each and every passing round. This sweep of all three races in Indianapolis might have been the final balloon pop moment for the field that I feel has been hanging on by a few threads in recent weeks. Jett’s ability to attack at the right moments on that nasty track and continue to jump into and through the whoop section that many could only dream of rolling in a straight line. Showcased a skill level above the other contenders at this point in time. Leaving that feeling of air escaping the balloon where it’s now too late to stop it.

If Jett continues this streak beyond 3 races and into 5-6 races. Not only will the Championship be just about sealed. But so will the baton pass from one generation to the next.

On the injury front. A somewhat quiet list from Indianapolis. Thankfully. Not many new injuries but we must highlight Coty Schock and his return from injury. I’m impressed and slightly concerned all at once. The ability of Moto riders to overcome injury and pain is just outstanding and really gives me plenty of ammunition for the general public in the clinic to pick up their game. But Coty’s ability to focus on his rehab, not hold back on his movements from essentially the moment he woke up from surgery is seriously impressive. This early rehab is what made his ride in Indianapolis possible. The 5th place finish just made it astonishing.

My slight concern lies in the wound not being sealed in one week. Along with the risk of complicating the injury with a further fall. The wound is a 7-10 day healing time. So he was pushing the friendship on that glue and stitches holding the wound together. But the risk of a fall is an interesting question. Bones break. Yes. But when they are plated. They tend to bend and break screws out of freshly inserted holes. As an athlete the week missed can mean the end of a championship, a future ride not signed or the ability to make money that week. Making the risk sometimes worth the potential reward. This was something Coty Schock would have taken into account as he currently only has a Supercross deal signed for 2024. So the effort to get out there and finish 5th was well worth the effort. But had it gone wrong it might have been a whole different article I wrote this week.
