Eli Tomac returns to racing following his recovery from an Achilles tendon rupture in 2023

Welcome to 2024 and Anaheim One. Supermotocross is back for another year. With 17 rounds of Supercross. 11 rounds of Motocross and 3 supermotocross playoff rounds across the United States of America to crown 7 champions across the two classes in each sub-series.

A Massive season of racing is upon us and that means for most of the field a dedication to their fitness, nutrition, general health and well-being to ensure that they can not only perform on race day. But perform on 31 separate race days from January to September.

Not everyone will make it through the season. A number of reasons will prevent a group of riders from getting to all the events. Mainly injury. In past seasons, particularly the Supercross section of the series. Injuries have come thick and fast to riders of all levels. Eli Tomac was a race and a bit away from winning last year’s championship but an Achilles tear in the second last moto whilst leading saw that title dream end in a single snap of the tendon.

The sport is brutal from an injury standpoint. Malcolm Stewart was only able to complete in 2 of the 31 rounds in 2023 following a complete knee blowout where all 4 of his major knee ligaments were reportedly torn to some extent. That left him requiring major reconstructive surgery. He will be on the gate at Anaheim this weekend for the first time in just under a year after spending around 9 months off the bike completing the required rehab.

How many injuries will we see in 2024? Has there been any improvement or change of approach from the field to see themselves make it to the end of the series where big money is available in the playoffs? Time will tell if they have made a change. But I think many are still focused on a single race win and the glory that comes from that, rather than the sustainable financial gain from an injury-free run throughout the 31 rounds of SuperMotocross.

Stay tuned each week of racing in 2024 for updates within the articles about rider injuries, rider returns and updates from the rehab path.

Bring on an entertainment-filled race season.
