The Emergency Department – 2022 AMA Supercross Round 9 – Who’s In And Out

Well, at this point Supercross has been gnarly from an injury standpoint in 2022. Without data back through its whole history, I can’t confirm this. But damn, this injury list has got to be the longest in history at this point of the season.

We held high hopes of a competitive East Coast championship only 2weeks ago when their series started. But heading to round 3 for them and we are down to two realistic championship hopefuls. Austin Forkner and Jeremy Martin are now likely out for the season. RJ Hampshire lost a lot of points with his concussion last weekend and as much as he is racing this week. You have to think he will be a step off his usual best given the last week’s history. If not just his confidence would have been severely dented. So we have to hope that both Jett Lawrence and Cameron Mcadoo stay healthy or this could be a really one-sided affair like the West Coast became.

So last week saw nine injuries from race day. One injury on press day. Although that’s debatable as an appendix isn’t really dependent on a crash. As well as one midweek training crash. Quite the week for the sports stars. Not a good week that is!

Austin Forkner (33) is out for the season after a crash with Jett Lawrence saw him end the night and season with a broken collar bone. Photo: AMA Supercross

Not only was this week’s injury list long. It was concerning as four were concussions. Five if you want to count Pierce Brown causing the red flag in the qualifying and somehow being cleared to race that night despite the head knock. While we are on the concussion talk. I have to say from the outside looking in. Something is amiss with the concussion protocol and on track assessments. One, not sure how Pierce Brown passed it to race the same day? Two, how does RJ Hampshire get cleared on Saturday night after Arlington to ride Daytona when he was spread eagle for a lap on the track? And three, the AMA concussion protocol says supervised five-stage return to ride program. Not sure who, if anyone is supervising this? Something I’d love to have more visibility on but I’m sure will be kept close to the AMA chest for some time yet. I will keep digging.

Austin Forkner and Jeremy Martin are some big losses for the East Series. Both guys have been struggling big time in recent years with regular injuries. Austin’s collarbone fracture this week is the same one he had plated last year. Making recovery a bit difficult. Potentially requiring surgery to remove the plate and re-plate in a new position with new screw points. For Jeremy, it seems he has further injured his left shoulder that was dislocated last supercross season. Unconfirmed info here but his labrum has been reported as the concern and surgery is likely for him. Given his dislocation history, it is likely that he needs the labrum repaired to assist with preventing further issues. This will be a 2-3month recovery if this path is taken. Making the start of the outdoors a bit touch and go for Jeremy. Could this be another lost season for him?

So where to from here for the series? Well if you listen to RC. The series starts in Daytona. But given the injury list, I think it’s over for a lot of people. I’m getting nervous for another 7 rounds after Daytona for how many guys will be lining up at the season finale. Could be rather empty gates in Salt Lake City if this injury rate keeps up.

If we have missed a rider or got an injury update wrong let us know. alwaysmoto2019@gmail.com or @always.moto on Instagram

See you next week Moto fans.
