The Emergency Department – 2022 AMA Supercross Round 16 – Who’s In And Out

Author: David Hogan

Posted:

It’s mile-high city time this week in Monster Energy AMA Supercross.

Racing this week will be in Denver Colorado where the air will be thin and two championships could be confirmed for Eli Tomac and Christian Craig.

Eli had an interesting ride in Foxborough. He had an opportunity to secure the championship last week by beating Jason Anderson. But things went sideways quickly and Eli ended up in 7th position. No Championship. At least until his hometown race this week, maybe?

Interestingly, Eli is sensationally good at altitude in previous seasons. If this had been round 4 or 10 or 13. I would instantly pick Eli to win and win easily at altitude. But, when championship pressure kicks in. I don’t see Eli winning the race. I also don’t see Jason Anderson winning either. Based on his past health issues when racing at altitude. So this week could be a different repeat winner or maybe a first-time winner this year in my eyes.

The injuries have thankfully, slowed a little in these final rounds. I think this is in part a result of a lack of riders at the events as they are already out of action injured.

There are also not a lot of riders making a return to Supercross at this point of the season either. Despite a lot of the riders being recovered and back on practice tracks. They are all practising outdoors and are focused on the start of that championship. Very rare is it that a rider returns for 1-3races at the end of supercross. Props to Austin Forkner for doing exactly that. He was rewarded in his second race back from injury with a race win! I shouldn’t have been surprised. When I interviewed his mechanic Tony Archer for The AlwaysMoto Podcast Tony was high on his from immediately when he got back after injury.

Jerry Robin is making a comeback also this week for the West Coast round. He is still dealing with a grade 4 AC separation so I don’t know how well this will go. Maybe stay away from him if you play fantasy.

Dean Wilson continues to be in a word of awkward pain. Four surgeries later and still ongoing wound care to his butt has him on the slow recovery path. His surgeon is working on a natural open healing plan for his footpeg wound. If they just stitched the wound closed they risk a fluid pocket and infection that would be more problematic. So instead they have to leave it somewhat open and allow it to naturally close over. Thus this recovery will be quite some time. I don’t expect to see Deano outdoors for possibly the first half, maybe longer into the series.

On a championship front. Massive congratulations to our young Aussie Jett Lawrence. His East Coast Championship puts him higher on the list of Aussie moto legends. With him now having an outdoor national title and the regional supercross championship all before 18. His future is bright. He just needs to stay off this list below and things will continue to be bright for him.
