Supercross is back after what seemed like a very long weekend off. Along with the racing, a stack of riders are also making their return to the track this week.
Making it a real Eminem song week! Guess who’s back, back again. (please tell me you got that reference?)
Many riders took the chance to gain an extra week of preparation and recovery before making their returns for this week’s Round 13 at St. Louis. From the medical side of things, I feel the riders and teams used their brains to ensure the return to racing was not rushed. From a rider standpoint, they are just thinking I can sneak in 5-6 more ride days before I race and maybe that makes a difference to the overall result the first night back. Either way, I’m glad they took the extra time.
So on the other side of the returning riders coin is the riders out for this week. Now the list is still long below and hopefully next week once we removed some of the returned guys. We will have a reasonable list size again. It’s been out of control so far this season. But joining the wrong side of the coin list this week is Cooper Webb.
The defending champ has put out a post that he is out for St. Louis from a mid-week crash. Now that’s bad news for the series but you have to wonder about a few things here. One. Cooper has been carrying some reasonable injuries the last few weeks already so is there a chance that there was no mid-week crash this is just an easy out for him to rest up a bit for a shot at a win in the last few round of Supercross? Two. If he did in fact crash this week. One might wonder why with a fracture in his hand from Detroit. Would he have not been better placed doing other training methods during the break to allow the injury to further heal? (Clears throat, hmm Aldon?) Three. Will this be a one-week recovery as they indicate in the PRs from KTM? Or will this be the excuse to sit out until outdoors to be fully healed up for that championship?
Given his chance at defending his Supercross title has now completed gone. Time will tell and only those close to the KTM camp know what’s going on. Injury info doesn’t flow freely from that team. But RedBull KTM, a once three-rider team at the beginning of the season, is now down to only Marvin Musquin for at least St. Louis, maybe longer.
We flip back to East Coast 250 action this week. I’m hoping Jett Lawrence can keep things a bit more together this week at the triple crown format. The young Aussie has been fantastic at all rounds this year, but that last triple crown race was a bit wild for everyone’s liking. We also need a healthy Jett at Atlanta for the Showdown for the coasts to get the race we need in 2022. Between Christain Craig, Jett Lawrence, Hunter Lawrence, Jo Shimoda, Cameron Mcadoo, Pierce Brown, and Michael Mosiman. Fingers crossed they can all make it there in one piece and go toe to toe for the full 15 mins plus one.
St. Louis has traditionally had some good racing action. It has also had some major injuries. AKA Ryan Villopoto in 2010. Hoping we can see some good action and minimal injuries during the run to the end of Supercross 2022.
