The Emergency Department – 2022 AMA Supercross Round 12 – Who’s In And Out

Justin Brayton has had better years, first, he suffered Covid and is now sidelined after being concussed!

2022 Supercross continues to deliver. Injuries. It is delivering injuries.

Indy was treacherous. Ruts as deep as your footpegs across the track. No good line was seen anywhere on that track after the first lap of the first heat race. This led to big gaps in the field from 1st to 5th. Guys were getting lapped numerous times in the main event. Indy also saw a few more concussions added to the injury list. Maybe a few more riders who might not make it to any more supercross events this year also from some other injuries.

We are now up to 12 concussions recorded in the 2022 season. More than one per round so far to date. This is up from 2021 which only had 10 all season.

Many riders going through the concussion protocol in 2022. For the AMA guys, this is a few steps to clear. From the ImPACT computer test that compares to a baseline score, the rider completed prior to the season. Then the AMA 5 step return to ride program. That takes a minimum of 5 days to clear.
These stages are as follows.

Stage one – Supervised Light gym workout
Stage two – Supervised spin bike or road cycle
Stage three – normal off-bike training
Stage four – Light on-bike session
Stage five – On-bike session

This program all is all culminated with a final clearance from the ImPACT test online on the first race day back before the first practice.

A reasonable program in place by the AMA to protect riders’ ongoing health not just during their racing career. But also beyond it. I still think there is more that should be done here. But there is a decent process being followed.

Shane McElrath will probably not be back until round 13 at St Louis pending the severity of a knee injury.

So back to the West Coast for the 250 guys and the East Coast on a break. Hunter Lawrence, Jo Shimoda, and Carson Mumford will be all back on the gate this weekend after their crashes at the last few West coast rounds, 5 weeks ago. But expect Christian Craig to run away with the win again if he has no issues.

The 450 class will surely see Eli Tomac start to manage this to the end soon. But will his management mode still be faster than the rest of the field as it seemed to be at Indy? I think so this week at least. After the break that is coming maybe that management mode gets a bit further in place.
