The Emergency Department – 2022 AMA Supercross Round 10 – Who’s In And Out

Ken Roczen (94) announced earlier in the week that he will be taking an indefinite break.

An Epic Daytona that will be etched into the record books has come and gone. Eli got the keys to Daytona with his 6th win in the building making him the winningest rider at Daytona. Quite the accomplishment.

Jett Lawrence also walked away from the field to his second win of the season and took ownership of the championship lead.

Daytona was by far the best round for lack of injuries so far in 2022.

A few rider injuries leading into the event. A few riders elected to sit out to aid recovery. But overall nothing major has come from Daytona on race day that we have come across since the event. A quiet week one might say. Until the mid-week news dropped that Ken Roczen is out of Supercross indefinitely.

Arguably the sport’s biggest star is out for health reasons that have been attributed to a continuation of his health issues since his arm injuries in 2017 and 2018. Something that has tried to derail his career since all those surgeries that were required to fix his left arm in particular from the 2017 crash at Anaheim.

So the interesting thing for me in this Ken Roczen story. This current phase of the story is now 2-3months deep. But in reality, it is 4-5years of him managing this Epstein Barr Virus. Now for those that don’t realise. The Epstein Barr virus once in your system. Never really leaves. It lays dormant and at times of high stress or load. It will rear its ugly head. In Ken’s case, since 2017. Has the virus ever laid dormant? I don’t feel he has thought about his results over the last 4-5years and the need for him to miss the outdoors in 2020.

So given it never really resolves. Will a few weeks off make enough of a difference in his health to allow him to return to top form? I doubt it. I feel the best outcome for Ken in terms of his health alone comes from him sitting out the remaining supercross rounds. Potentially Motocross too. This could be quite the absence from racing by Ken that we are not accustomed to. Most guys ride through injuries or return in unbelievable timeframes. Not take extended recovery periods for health issues. This is unfamiliar territory for Moto athletes.

How does this absence affect his riding? Regular bike time is what keeps these guys sharp and at the tip of the spear. If Ken goes multiple weeks or months without any seat time or seat time at a decent pace. Will it affect his speed and competitiveness come whatever race he returns to next? Things we won’t know until he lines up next. Something we also don’t know at this stage. But don’t be surprised if this is longer than you think it should be. Might not be until 2023. But that’s the worst-case scenario.

Detroit this weekend moves back into traditional stadium layouts. Giving us less room to move on the track and tends to leave more chance of injury on the table.

Will Jett keep his calm and race to another win? Is this the start of Eli Tomac running away with the 2022 title? As always I don’t know these answers but I will be tuned in to find out with everyone else.
