Why is it that when a guy or girl is on rails and looking like they are riding faster than almost anyone, the inevitable get-off is just about a lap or so away from happening?

Jeremy Martin was on that rail. Found his line. Hauling the mail. Had licked the stamp. Went send mode. Whatever your catchphrase for going as fast as you possibly can is, he was that. Until he wasn’t. The re-aggravation of the existing fractured scaphoid has now ended his season. But let’s consider his injury list this year and how they may have played a part in each subsequent injury.

Martin started with a dislocated shoulder in Orlando. Sat out Supercross. Only to have a practice crash leading into the outdoors that caused the fractured scaphoid. Would that crash have happened if he wasn’t recovering from a shoulder injury? You will never know. Then he re-aggravates the wrist in his crash a Thunder Valley. Again was this because of the wrist injury and weaker shoulder from the supercross injury reducing grip strength? Then another mid-week crash whilst training causes some broken fingers. Can we blame the shoulder and wrist here again? Potentially.

Then the final nail last weekend at IronMan. Do all those injuries influence his ability to manage the position of the bike on track when he gets to warp speed? Again, potentially. There are no such things as coincidence. You will also never be able to confirm this theory. But I’m telling you now one influenced the next and the next and so on.

So how about the health issues gripping the AMA field in the latter stages of summer. Max Anstie and Marvin Musquin were both out with covid, status for this weekend remains unclear for Musquin. Anstie is reportedly back in. Don’t get too deep into the Grant Langston TV crew Covid drama. Not to mention plenty of other crews also missing with Covid related issues.

As reported earlier in the week Jeremy Martin’s 2021 AMA Pro Motocross season is over after breaking his arm at the previous round at Crawfordsville. Photo: Yamaha Racing

Then there is the mystery that is Justin Cooper. Does anyone know what an Ailment is? Because apparently he has one and can’t yet describe it. I have a suspicion that when we finally find out what his “ailment” is. We will be looking at that crash at Washougal and how it might just be one of his regrets this year if, in fact, he is unable to ride to his full potential at the remaining two rounds. All the while Jett Lawrence seems to be going from strength to strength. There is still the possibility that Justin Cooper is just the one that isn’t handling the pressure as well as his Title combatant. That’s probably a bigger story than hiding a potential injury but will we ever find out the truth?

With two Californian rounds to go in this year’s championship. Many riders will drop out at this point just from a travel point of view. Along with numerous riders who have taken an early exit to the offseason for some much-needed injury recovery time. Dean Wilson is one such rider. Finally taking some time to rest his body and overcome the Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) he’s been battle all outdoors.

Justin Bogle is probably wishing he could do the same as his EBV continues to drain him. But Bogle’s contract situation is in much need of a few more good results so unless something massive changes expect him to push on to seasons end. Stilez Robertson continues to be MIA. Not any info on his whereabouts lately. Did have a knee issue late in Supercross. But also health issues in MX. But no idea why he is out currently.

Derek Drake is making a return for the final two rounds after his midseason heart surgery. Good story to follow here and see if he can build up to a higher fitness level now that his long-standing heart issues have hopefully been resolved.

The ClubMX Yamaha team as a whole has parked the Semi for the season. The entire team is out with injury and there will be no fill-in riders for them. The team will be looking for a lot of recovery time and begin to prepare for Supercross 2022.

Now with 2 rounds left, a very thin field, and some hot temperatures for the Californian races. The only thing an Aussie moto fan is hoping for is more of the same Jett Lawrence from IronMan at Pala and Hangtown.

Until next round moto fans.

As always, If your favorite rider is on this list, most likely they are seeing a doctor or been to the Emergency Department recently.

This list has who we know has an injury. What that injury is, as well as when we expect them back at the races. Maybe some extras if you’re lucky!

Return to Riding Timeframe – 1wk.

Next race prediction – Christian is back for Pala.

Garrett Marchbanks #48 – ClubMX Yamaha (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? Rnd 9 Budds Creek

Injured What? Not so much an injury, but a health issue that has been diagnosed since he completed forearm pump surgery during the season. Marchbanks has been diagnosed with Addison’s disease. This is a rare but serious issue where the body’s adrenal glands don’t produce enough of certain hormones. Specifically cortisol and aldosterone. Cortisol helps fight infection when the body is stressed and aldosterone helps maintain the bodies fluid/blood volume. These hormones are produced by the adrenal glands that sit on top of the kidneys.
This is quite a serious health issue for Marchbanks to now learn to manage. Particularly to continue his professional racing career with this disease. Likely that he will now need hormone replacement therapy (HRT medication) to assist his management of the condition.

Return to Riding Timeframe – Marchbanks has initially indicated he will be trying to return for the final two rounds in California.

Next race prediction – As I expected, Marchbanks is having some initial issues with the management of the condition. Probably medication level management and he won’t return for the final two rounds of MX.

Seth Hammaker #150 – Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? Rnd 9 Budds Creek

Injured What? Reports are he hit his head during practice and then again during moto one.

Return to Riding Timeframe – It’s been 3wks to date and no news, in this case, is not good news.

Colt Nichol #64 – Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? Rnd 7 Washougal 24/7/21

Injured What? Shoulder – Initial reports from Colt indicate only bruising to the shoulder.

Return to Riding Timeframe – Colt was off the bike for approx 2-3wks after his crash at Washougal.

Next race prediction – Colt is out for MX. next race won’t be until Supercross 2022.

Adam Cianciarulo #9 – Monster Energy Kawasaki (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? December 2020. Re-aggravated in a crash at Millville

Injured What? Ulnar Nerve compression (Cubital Tunnel Syndrome)

Return to Riding Timeframe – Adam has had surgery just after Millville. Would expect him to be off the bike for 8-12wks. Putting him back on the bike around October 2021. He is already doing a lot of gym-based rehab with no sign of limitations on his operated elbow.

Next race prediction – Supercross 2022

Alex Ray #83 – SGB Maxxis Kawasaki (AMA SX/MX)

Injured What? Knee – ACL tear, Medial Meniscus tear and bone bruising.

Return to Riding Timeframe – Approx 6months post repair. Max has had surgery on 16/7/21 and is on the road to recovery.

Next race prediction – Potentially East Coast SX if he is aiming to do Supercross in 2022.

Phil Nicoletti #715 – Motosport.com ClubMX Yamaha (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? Re-Aggravated an old Injury in practice at RedBud on 3/7/21

Injured What? Knee – ACL tear, Medial and Lateral Meniscus tear

Return to Riding Timeframe – Approx 6months post repair. Phil had surgery two weeks ago and is now in the early stages of recovery and rehab.

Henry Miller #70 – Privateer KTM (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? 23/5/21 during preparation for Outdoors initially tore the ACL. Had attempted to manage conservatively and return to racing at High Point. Jason Anderson #21 – Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? Mid Week prior to Rnd 2 of MX

Injured What? Fractured Hand and some teeth knocked out.

Return to Riding Timeframe – Missed about 6-7wks with recovery

Next race prediction – Should have been on track this weekend at Unadilla. But hearing talk of an ankle injury that required surgery recently and will keep him out until Supercross 2022. Jason may not be seen on a Husky again. The next time he is riding will most likely be on another brand.

Cameron Mcadoo #31 – Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? Rnd 1 Pala – 29/5/21

Injured What? Knee ACL tear with an avulsion fracture. This is where the ligament tears a piece of bone with it. In this case off the tibial plateau.
