CDR/Boost/Mobile Yamaha's Darryll King and Team No Fear Honda's Cody Cooper have been crowned up the 2004 Maxxis Australian Motocross Champions in Pro Open and Pro Lite classes respectively, despite neither taking the days overall at the final round at Wonthaggi, Vic, Sunday (Aug 15).

To prove how competitive the season has been it was the two challengers that where victorious at the final round in Wonthaggi with the younger King, Shayne, taking the Pro Open class, whilst Coopers main rival Cameron Taylor took out the Pro Lites.

The 23rd Annual Air Nautiques/AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships presented by Amsoil finished up last weekend (Aug 8) with 33 champions crowned at Loretta Lynn's Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee.

With more than 22,000 entries at the Area and Regional levels, the nationwide program was narrowed down to 1,386 finalists - 42 per class - all of whom would compete in three 20-minute motos to determine the 2004 champions.

Near-perfect conditions greeted all 99 motos throughout the week, with the podium finishers in each moto receiving gold, silver and bronze medals from event organizers MX Sports.

Australia was this year represented by Tye Simmonds form Bourke, NSW. Simmonds qualified for the event after winning his class and a trip to the states last year as apart of the KTM cup. The in form 11-year-old is currently pounding out his own perfect season here in Australia taking a staggering 28 wins from 28 starts so far in 2004.

Tye competed in two classes at the Nationals, the 85cc stock 7-11 class, where a superb start with a third placing first moto, Tye was in contention, but a disappointing second moto of 11th, he came home strong in the last moto to clinch 6th overall.

The 85cc modified class would be a different story. With first placing dominated by Ian Trenttel and second placing to Eli Tomac, the rest of the field would have to fight for the podium. A battle arose with Tye, Landon Currier and Justin Starling, fighting over 3rd, 4th and 5th place in every moto, but Tye would come out on top to secure 3rd overall. 'Bubba' Stewarts younger brother Malcolm would finish 6th overall in the same class.
