Tai Woffinden closes on FIM Speedway Grand Prix World Championship

Posted:

World Championship leader Tai Woffinden challenged his FIM Speedway Grand Prix rivals to crack his winning formula as he closes on becoming Great Britain‰Ûªs first speedway world champion since 2000.

The 23-year-old could secure speedway‰Ûªs biggest prize if he leaves the Rockklassiker Scandinavian FIM Speedway Grand Prix at Stockholm‰Ûªs Friends Arena on Saturday with a lead of 22 points or more over his nearest rival.

The Scunthorpe-born hotshot has 134 points and is 20 clear of Emil Sayfutdinov, who holds second place on 114. But the Russian‰Ûªs season has been ended by knee and elbow ligament damage, meaning Poland‰Ûªs Jaroslaw Hampel, who is third on 112, is Woffy‰Ûªs nearest rival.

The British champion, bidding to follow in 2000 champion Mark Loram‰Ûªs footsteps, has made a dramatic transformation from rank outsider to firm favourite since being named as one of this season‰Ûªs permanent wild card riders in October 2012.

Woffinden, who has ridden much of this season with the broken collarbone he suffered at the Fogo British SGP in Cardiff on June 1, has taken everything from his engines to his exercise regime up a level.

But asked what has been the secret to his success, the Mitas Czech SGP winner is keeping his cards close to his chest in a bid to stay ahead of the competition.

‰ÛÏI‰Ûªve been doing all sorts of things with my training." Woffinden said. "What I have been doing is for me to know and other people to find out. I don‰Ûªt want to tell everyone; otherwise they‰Ûªll do it next year.

‰ÛÏIf I can do anything to give myself an advantage, I‰Ûªll keep hush, hush about it. It has been a big season and I have changed a lot of things. Things are working professionally and personally.

‰ÛÏThere are other things to the package besides my training. I‰Ûªve put in the effort to find out what works for me. I don‰Ûªt want to tell everyone because you don‰Ûªt have a long career in speedway and I‰Ûªll keep it to myself, but good luck to everyone else trying to find out!

‰ÛÏI‰Ûªm not going to sit and tell everyone all our secrets, what me and the team talk about, or brag to the world about what we‰Ûªre doing. That‰Ûªs our package and how we do it.‰Û
