Beta factory rider Steve Holcombe has made an impressive start to his participation in the 2018 Enduro World Championship by finishing as the highest placed non-Finnish rider on each of the two days of the GP of Finland.

Battling through true winter conditions to earn a 10th place overall result on day one the British rider then improved his overall position to sixth on day two. The 2017 FIM EnduroGP World Champion also placed fifth and third in the Enduro 3 class.

Completing more than 400 kilometres of riding over 11-and-a-half hours during the opening day‰Ûªs competition at the 83rd running of the Finnish winter classic PÌ_ijÌ_nne, Holcombe rode cautiously for much of the early stage of the race. Remaining largely mistake free he increased his pace during the second half of the day, going on to successfully complete the night time special stages and end a gruelling day of competition in 10th overall.

At the end of the shorter second day, the 22-year-old finished a very strong sixth overall having placed inside the top 10 on all but two of the day‰Ûªs 12 special tests.

‰ÛÏIt was such a tough weekend of racing here in Finland, but it‰Ûªs gone really well for me," Holcombe said. "Day one was just brutal. I think everyone expected the Finnish riders to be a level above everyone else and they showed just how strong they are in these conditions. Hats off to them. In a few of the tests I let some of the Finns overtake me in the hope that I could learn their lines and follow them, but I had no chance ‰ÛÒ they were just too fast.

"But I‰Ûªm happy with the way I rode, all things considered," he continued. "Finishing as the highest placed non-Finnish rider on both days is great. It was about trying to minimise mistakes this weekend, ride within myself and generally try and be smart and make the best start to the championship as I could. I feel like I did that and got some good points, so I‰Ûªm pleased with the way everything‰Ûªs gone.‰Û
