Speedway Grand Prix Returns to Australia with Adelaide Double-Header in 2027

Jason Doyle celebrates Australian SGP success in 2017

The FIM Speedway Grand Prix Championship will return to Australia for the first time in a decade in 2027, with Adelaide’s Gillman Speedway set to host the final two rounds of the series in a title-deciding double-header on October 29-30.

The announcement marks the first time the Speedway GP series has visited Australia since 2017, when Australian star Jason Doyle clinched the FIM Speedway World Championship in front of a home crowd at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium.

A decade after the championship’s last Australian appearance, Gillman Speedway will become the centre of the speedway world as riders battle for the sport’s biggest prize across rounds 10 and 11 of the 2027 championship.

The return of Speedway GP to Australia comes at a time when the nation is enjoying one of its strongest periods on the international stage. Australia claimed the 2025 FIM Speedway of Nations title and followed it up by winning the 2026 FIM Speedway World Cup, while Australian star Brady Kurtz remains firmly in the fight for this year’s Speedway GP crown heading into the season finale at Torun.

Mayfield Sports Events founder Richard Coleman said bringing Speedway GP back to Australia had been a priority since his organisation took control of the championship.

“One of the main questions we have received from the fans since we acquired the championships a year ago is when we would be going back to Australia, so it is an absolute pleasure to make that dream a reality in October 2027,” Coleman said.

Coleman believes the timing could not be better for the championship’s return, pointing to Australia’s recent international success and the country’s long-standing place in speedway history.

“Australia won the 2025 FIM Speedway of Nations and 2026 FIM Speedway World Cup, and Brady Kurtz is very much in contention for Speedway GP gold in Torun this weekend. This truly is a special time for Australian speedway, and there could not be a better moment to bring the series back to the country where the sport was born over 100 years ago.”

Coleman also acknowledged the support that helped secure the event for South Australia.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone at Gillman Speedway, the South Australian government, Motorcycling Australia and our partners at Monster Energy and the FIM for their support in making this happen. It has been a real team effort, and this is a special day for the sport Down Under.”

Gillman Speedway has long been regarded as one of Australia’s premier speedway venues and has hosted state, national and international solo and sidecar competition over many decades, including numerous Australian Championship events.

The Adelaide venue now joins a select list of Australian circuits to have hosted Speedway GP competition.

Australia previously staged Speedway GP rounds on four occasions, beginning with the 2002 FIM Speedway GP of Australia at Sydney’s Accor Stadium. American legend Greg Hancock won both the 2002 and 2015 Australian rounds before Australian riders enjoyed home success in the final two Melbourne events, with Chris Holder claiming victory in 2016 and Doyle winning in 2017 on his way to securing the World Championship.

The 2027 Australian double-header will also be the first time a Speedway World Champion has been crowned on Australian soil since Doyle’s memorable triumph nine years earlier.

The Adelaide rounds will conclude an 11-round championship that begins in Croatia on May 1 before visiting Poland, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Great Britain and Denmark on its way to Australia for the season finale.
