Solid Start to 2014 Supercross Season For KTM Riders

Posted:

Several exciting support class wins and two Pro Riders punching well above their weight were the highlights of KTM's weekend at the first round of the Australian Supercross Championships at Bathurst.

KTM motocross racing team rider Kirk Gibbs posted what was only the second supercross podium of his career when he finished third on Friday night.

Only a woeful start and a few traffic snarls along the way could prevent him from repeating the dose on Saturday night, when his spectacular recovery from a rear-of-field start yielded fourth place and a share of third in the championship as it makes its way to Phillip Island.

‰ÛÏRob was pretty shocked when I told him this was only my second supercross podium." Gibbs admitted. "It's something I've had to learn later in my career, I haven't always been the greatest Supercross rider and it‰Ûªs been really tough, but it's coming to me a lot easier than it has in previous years.

"It was good to get on the podium and at the same time a little frustrating because I feel I could really compete for wins. I should have been on the podium again last night, but it is what it is.

"I feel really good on the bike and it‰Ûªs just a matter of fine tuning to go that bit better at Phillip Island.‰Û

Many thought that Sunshine Coaster Jesse Dobson had big enough boots to fill stepping up as Gibbs‰Ûª teammate for the Supercross championship, but few realised it was the 17-year-old‰Ûªs first Supercross, thus making his 10, 7 finishes for the weekend and even more impressive achievement.

‰ÛÏMy first supercross was everything I expected if not more; it's my new favourite thing that's for sure!" Dobson commented. "It was a successful weekend and I achieved what I wanted to, which was top 10 on the first night, and then try and improve each round.

"Last night we came out with a seventh, so I'm pretty happy with how it all went. There were a couple of crashes and a lay down, but other than that I know the speed is there, and I know I do belong up the front of the pack battling with the top guys.‰Û

In Pro Lites racing, KTM Instant Security‰Ûªs Brenden Harrison took the round one victory and backed that up with fourth on Saturday night to be just two points off the championship lead heading down to Phillip Island.

Kale Makeham recovered from 12th on Friday, with a third last night to hoist himself up into sixth in the championship.

‰ÛÏNot too bad a weekend." Harrison said." I think I rode good and I'm stoked about the win but I had a couple of little mistakes in the final last night.

"It felt really good to cross the finish line first on Friday night. It was a long time coming and there was a lot of hard work and dedication behind it. It was a massive relief and gave me a lot of confidence going into last night as well, but I made a few mistakes.

"I‰Ûªll work on those this week and hopefully put it on the top of the box both nights next weekend. And then come in to Brisbane with the points lead is the goal.‰Û
