Yamaha mounted South Australian Shane Diener has been forced out of the 2014 Australasian Safari at the start of the third stage after suffering a hand injury on stage one.

Despite riding through pain on day two, Diener who sat second behind team-mate Rodney Faggattor after the opening day made the decision to pull out of the event and head to Subiaco in Western Australia for surgery after the medics at the event found bone fragments in his cut ring finger.

"Just letting people know that I didn't start day 3 at the Australasian Safari due to a hand injury that I received yesterday near the end of the first stage." Diener posted via his facebook page today.

"I crashed in some rocks, squashing my right ring finger. It tore the nail off, split the finger diagonally to nearly the first knuckle and fractured the end of the bone. The medics at the start of the second stage cleaned it and dressed it, but they were able to see the bone fragments in the cut!

"I rode the second stage, 255 km in some pain, but unable to hold on very well. I'm heading to Subiaco for micro surgery this afternoon.

"Thanks to the Safari crew and the medical crew for booking flights, organising surgery, looking after my hand etc., especially nurse Judy once again!

"I'm very disappointed, but I guess these things happen," he post concluded.
