Nine riders and two car teams from around the world were vying for an entry into the world‰Ûªs toughest off-road motorsport challenge from 20 to 27 September in Western Australia as the competed for a free entry in to the 2013 Dakar Rally.
South Australian Shane Diener won the Moto competition and also finished on the podium in third outright. He led the Dakar Challenge from Leg 1 and finished his first Australasian Safari event after six attempts. Diener won the the Dakar Challenge from Safari rookie Lee Stephens by 28 minutes.
The Dakar Challenge is a race within a race. The Australasian Safari is an eight-day offroad motorsport marathon for motos, autos and quads with approximately 3200 competitive kilometers of both technical and rally stages. This year, 100 competitors started, and 70 crossed the finish line.
