Ryan Capes aims for 300 feet!

Monster Energy's Ryan Capes will attempt to break the equivalent of Dr. Roger Bannister's sub four minute mile when he lines up next week to launch a motorcycle where no man has gone before ‰ÛÒ goal line to goal line on a football field, ie., 300 feet. Capes, widely known through out the close-knit fraternity of distance jumpers as "The One" when it comes time to nut up and go for distance, will crack the throttle, click through gears and launch his Pro Circuit tuned Honda CR250 way out into the night at Pacific Raceways in Kent, Wash., a week from this Saturday (Oct. 29) ‰ÛÒ to break the current distance record of 277 feet (Trigger Gumm) and, possibly, top the improbable 300-foot barrier. Filling the gap between Capes' take-off ramp and the giant dirt landing he plans on touching down on will be one of Monster Energy's ripped "Claw M" semis, along with a couple Bradley M1 tanks ‰ÛÒ courtesy of the local National Guard. The jump was actually supposed to come off in late July, but Capes wadded up on a 230-foot leap while playing around on his freestyle bike (vs. his distance bike). "Granted, I want to go 300 ‰ÛÒ and if the conditions are perfect there's a chance I will," said Capes. "But I'm just coming off losing my spleen, so I'm shutting 'er down after 280." A leap of 280-plus feet would give Capes the record over Gumm. But more importantly, it'd give him the edge on being the first to crack the 300-foot barrier ‰ÛÒ something Capes actually feels he already has given his experience and how he's approaching this awesome distance. "Gumm's take-off ramp is like 21 feet high ‰ÛÒ mine's 12," explained Capes. "He's (Gumm) riding a 500 (cc bike) and I'm on a 250. But the way I figure it, my bike's 20 pounds lighter and the way I've got it geared (14/46), I can hit it just a bit faster than when I set the record at 260 and go 280 with no problem." wrapped If Capes' math serves him, he'll get an additional 15 feet off of every 2.5 mph faster that he travels up his take-off ramp. "The way I have my bike geared I'll hit 76 (mph) in fourth, so I won't even have to click into fifth," said Capes. "That should send me out right around 280 feet and, with a lighter bike (than Gumm's 500), I'll touch down with a lot less force." Capes' jump will be filmed by NBC's "World Adventures" program. Stay tuned for the air date on that. For more information on Capes' world distance record attempt, check out his website at ryancapes.net.
