Reed robbed of a certain win at Daytona

Posted:

Chad Reed has been dealt a blow when the championship leaders bike failed three corners from the finish in atrocious conditions at the 10th round of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series at Daytona in Florida. Reeds closest rival in the championship chase Kevin Windham took his second win for the season. With some of the worst conditions ever seen at an AMA Supercross event organisers did debate postponing the race but went ahead with a 12 lap final instead 0f the usual 20 laps. Reed reveled in the conditions as was stretching his lead to almost a minute when disaster struck. 3 corners from home and an Ocean of mud ahead the Australian fought hard to get his Yamaha firing again but it was not to be. In the end he was still warded 6th due to him lapping up to that position. After the race though the AMA penalized him a further 3 minutes for not entering the track in the correct place which dropped him down to 7th. "They were the worst track conditions we have raced on," said Reed. "It was so wet we should have been on jet skis instead of bikes," he joked. While it was very disappointing not to take the win I was stoked with my own performance." I finished my heat 44 seconds in front and was over a minute ahead of everyone else in the Main Event." "It was frustrating not to convert such a big lead and over 3 seconds advantage per lap into a win, but I am pleased because I know I rode well in the conditions." Commenting on what happened to the bike San Manuel Yamaha team manager Larry Brooks said, "It just sucked water and mud through the air boot. There was standing water on the track, and the bike sucked water and dirt, and when he stopped to line up for a rut, it just had no compression, got stuck in some mud and stopped. He had a minute and 15 second lead with three corners to go and couldn't finish, so obviously he's upset, but stuff happens. We should be happy that he got those points and move on to the next one."
