Red Letter Day For Honda At Coffs Harbour ProMX

Dean Ferris kept his MX1 Championship hopes alive with a pair of wins at Coffs Harbour.

Factory Honda’s Dean Ferris and Wilson Todd swept both classes at sixth stop of the 2022 Australian Motocross Championship (ProMX) that ran on a circuit that teams have not visited in the past decade.

The hard-pack track in Coffs Harbour proved technical, thanks in part to days of torrential rain that made the layout heavy in the morning. The track formed deep ruts that became hard and choppy, with race day weather being warm and dry.

Wilson Todd only has to take two more points in two rounds to wrap up the MX2 championship after his fifth clean sweep out of six rounds contested.

Wilson Todd qualified first in MX2 and, as has become the norm, displayed some impressive determination on his way to winning both motos. Todd had to navigate his way through the pack in each stint but did so swiftly and in a calculated manner. Patience and maturity were on show once he did eventually advance into the lead.

Todd now has a commanding lead in the MX2 championship with two rounds to go. The Queensland native only needs to score two points to secure the 2022 title, not that it is something that is on his mind. It is easy to forget that he has won eleven of the twelve races and every overall so far.

“I wanted to get to the lead quickly,” Todd said. “From there, I controlled the gap behind me as there was no need to push the limits on this track. Grip was getting away from us, especially in the last race. I am just racing each race as hard as I can. I have not been thinking about the championship. The team and I will talk about the final two rounds, as I plan to race a CRF450R if the opportunity allows for it.”

Dean Ferris returned to the top step of the podium in the premier division, winning both MX1 motos. His tenacious display was inspiring to all, as he fought to get to the front in both races and was relentless in his pursuit of the overall victory.

“I had no choice other than to win both races if I want to be in a position to race for the championship,” Ferris reflected. “I cannot control what happens with the other riders, but I will give this my all to the very last race. The team made some positive changes from qualifying and between both races. Having Grant, our suspension tech, on hand was instrumental to our results today. The team is working so well.”

MX3 rider Cambell Williams had the speed of the front runners but the tricky track got the better of him.

Cambell Williams continues to learn his race craft in the MX3 class. Qualifying was positive, as showed potential whilst en route to second fastest. Unfortunately, he fell in both races and posted 10-8 scores. Cambell sits third in the championship standings. “I cannot afford these mistakes,” Williams lamented. “With that said, the championship is not over and I will fight hard to get back to the top.”

Taylah McCutcheon returned to racing at Coffs Harbour, choosing to race with the men in the MX3 class to get some seat time ahead of the final round of the Women’s Championship in Coolum. The technical track definitely tested her and it was a great race for her to return to in preparation. “It was tough out there, but it was good. I know what I need to work on before the final round of the Women’s series in Coolum and this is what we needed. I am motivated and determined.”
