Red Bull Rookie racer Olly Simpson still upbeat after big crash at Jerez

Posted:

South Australian Red Bull Rookies racer, Olly Simpson suffered numerous broken bones after an early race crash during the opening race in Jerez, Spain on the weekend.

Coming in to the day full of confidence off the back of his best qualifying result to date, Simpson was positive he could climb further up the field from his 16th place starting spot after some advise from his riding coaches.

"It was an eventful weekend for me at the second round of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup in Jerez, Spain." Simpson stated in a blog on the Red Bull Rookies web site. "After the practice I was given some great advice from Danny & Gustl, our rider coaches, which I executed in qualifying with an instant result in my lap times.

"This put me in 16th position on the grid which was definitely a big step forward for me," he added.

"I was super keen for the 1st race as I felt that I was going to do really well as I know I could have dropped my lap times even more with the more laps I did.

"Unfortunately at the start of the race on the way to the first corner I was knocked off my bike, sending me into the guard rail in the pit lane exit.

"I have a broken left arm, a broken bone in my right foot and I dislocated my right arm. I am hoping to get out of hospital soon and I am looking forward to the next race in Assen a the end of June," he continued.

The always positive Simpson thanked everyone at the track who looked after him after his crash and is eager to get back on his KTM and go racing.

"I would like to thank everyone from the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup, the great doctors at the circuit, Tom Larson and Lauren Vickers De Puniet for their help and everyone for their well wishes.

"I can't wait to get back on the bike again." Simpson concluded.
