Picketts Triple wins Twins Championships!

Posted:

The Formula Extreme series is over and Cycle Torque's Alex Pickett has done the double!

Not only did he win the FX Pro Twins Formula 3 National Championship by just 2 points on his Triumph Daytona 675, he also won the major championship, the Australian Formula Extreme Pro Twins Formula 3 Championship by 10 points from Gary Peake, with John Price in third, both also Daytona 675 mounted.

Alex came into the FX Nationals round some 30 odd points behind leader, KTM's Angus Reekie. A good result by Alex in Saturday's race one saw him bridge the gap, and when Reekie scored minimal points in race two, and crashed out in race three, Alex was able to take the series win.

Sunday's Australian championship saw Alex and Gary Peake go at it for the entire first race, with Alex passing Peake on the outside of turn nine on the last lap, not without some contact though, to hold it to the line and take the win, giving him a scant six point lead in the championship with two races to go.

Race two saw Alex take an early lead only to be passed by fellow Triumph rider Brad Glennan, with Peake a number of positions behind. Peake knew he had to beat Alex to have a chance to take the title but crashed in turn nine. He was able to remount and gain some points but this allowed Alex to cruise home in the final race to take the Aussie title.

In the overall Pro Twins championship Alex finished fifth outright, the first Triumph home, with three 1198 and a lone 848 Ducati in front.

"I pretty much rode to consolidate by second place in the National series but when Angus Reekie crashed out I couldn't believe I had won it.

The Australian Championship was another story altogether.

"I just had to beat Gary Peake in race one but I thought I had left my run too late when a couple of 1198 Ducatis got involved in our 'personal' battle. On the last lap I rode around Gary in turn nine and his front tyre left marks on my leathers. We came together but I was able to out-accelerate him to turn 10 and held it to the line".

"I'm very thankful for all those who helped me out but I couldn't have done it without Tim from Hunter Valley Paintball who put in financially, the team from Triumph Australia who supplied a great bike, support, and technical advice, and Jamie and Andy from Sportscycles Bikecare at Newcastle who worked tirelessly on the Daytona to ensure the Power Commander got the best out of our performance upgrades".

"I'd also like to thank Gilles Tooling, Pirelli, Shell, OGK helmets, Five gloves, Quinn Leathers, AXO boots, Foran exhausts, Anderson Bike Stands, BMC air filters, RK Chains, Carrera Group and Staintune Exhausts, and of course Dad!"...
