Long-time trials stalwart Philip Whittle has been named the 2025 recipient of the Graham ‘Checkers’ Stewart Official of the Year Award, recognising an extraordinary six decades of dedication to trial competition and motorcycle sport in Australia.
Hailing from Bendigo, Whittle is widely regarded as one of the most experienced and respected volunteer officials in the country. His current portfolio is extensive, holding Motorcycling Australia accreditation as a starter, timekeeper, steward, measurer, scrutineer, race secretary, clerk of course and coach. Beyond that, he serves on MA’s Trial Commission and is well known for his long-standing role as manager of Australia’s Trial des Nations team.
Reflecting on the honour, Whittle said the award carried special meaning, explaining that his motivation has always been about giving back to the sport rather than personal recognition. “This award means a lot to me. I don’t do it for the accolades; I do it to help the sport,” he said. He added that officiating had been a deeply rewarding part of his life and encouraged others to get involved, particularly in trials, noting that people could start as observers before progressing through roles such as scrutineer, clerk of course or steward.
Family has played a huge part in Whittle’s trials journey, something he said he was immensely proud of. His daughter Chloe is a Level 4 official, his son Jake is Level 3, and his wife Glenda is a Level 4 race secretary. “We travel all over Australia running events and it’s great to have the family involved,” Whittle said.
That family involvement was on full display at the 2025 Australian Trial Championship in Erinsvale, Queensland, where Phil served as Clerk of Course, Glenda took on Race Secretary duties and Chloe acted as the MA Steward, while Jacob lined up as a competitor in the Twinshock class.
The award is named in honour of the late Graham ‘Checkers’ Stewart, a hugely influential figure in Australian motorcycle sport who famously waved the chequered flag at events including the Australian MotoGP, FIM Speedway Grand Prix and FIM WorldSBK rounds. Established to recognise outstanding performance by an MA Senior Official, the award places Whittle alongside previous recipients Brendan Ferrari (2019), Tom Williams (2021), Denise Stronach (2022), Angus Bugeja (2023) and Mark Hancock (2024).
Selection for the award is based on criteria including integrity, long-term dedication and commitment, technical skill and knowledge, respect from peers, the ability to mentor others, excellence in official duties and experience officiating at national level.
Despite the recognition, Whittle continues to work tirelessly behind the scenes. He remains deeply committed to the growth of trial competition in Australia and to supporting junior riders through his role as President of the Trials Club of Victoria, a position he has held since 2010.
