Opening Night of Pinjar Park Speedway this Saturday

Posted:

The Speedway Club of WA's Opening Night is this Saturday 1st October at Pinjar Park, Pederick Road Neerabup-Wanneroo.

The Motorcycling WA sanctioned opening event of the year is The Foundation Night event and will be a great start to the 2011/12 summer season at the ultra exciting Pinjar Park speedway.

The Foundation Night Event pay's homage to two of the biggest names in West Australian motorcycle speedway history, Chum Taylor and Dennis Nash. The Speedway Motorcycle Club WA are delighted that both Chum and Dennis will be present at the event.

For anyone that witnessed the glory days at Claremont speedway you will most certainly remember these two legends of the sport. Chum is a former Australian solo champion from 1966, a 5 time West Australian title holder and a world individual finalist amongst his other numerous career highlights. Chum retired from racing in 1973 after answering an SOS to ride for Australia in a test match against England aged 46. A book published in 1986, a 'Dangerous Life' tells the entire Chum Taylor story, a must read for all speedway fan.

When it comes to sidecar racing in Australia the name Dennis Nash is right up there within the sport. Dennis changed the sport forever with not only the design of sidecars but he totally dominated the division locally & nationally for many years. Career highlights include 5 Australian titles from an era when the 'chairs' ruled the roost around the country. A special mention must be made to Ray Barber, Russell Hearne, Dennis Mortimer and Jeff Gittus all of whom shared the chair with the great man, Mr Dennis Nash.

Young South Aussie hot shot Robert Medson will join Queensland's Harley Brigden as the two interstate imports that will contest the Foundation Night. Robert comes to Perth highly recommended by Pinjar regular, Victoria's 'Wild Thing' Tyron Proctor. Robert is in his 2nd year of senior racing with a very good junior record behind him. Robert has also won back to back Australian best pairs junior titles in 09 and 2010 and finished a very creditable 3rd in last years Australian 350cc title. This will be Rob's 2nd trip to Pinjar as he last rode here back in 08 at the Australian U/16 Title.

"We are again 'thrilled to bits' to have these two outstanding young racers join us for what is building to be a great night of motorcycle speedway action", SMCWA President, Steve Marson said today." We've been very pro active in bringing over riders each season to not only expose some great young talent but to push Pinjar Park to the rest of Australia. We have the best of both worlds here, a truly great junior track and a hugely exciting senior track that really turns it on".

In the past some of Australia's finest young riders have come to Perth for this event, names like Darcy Ward, Richard Sweatman, Alex Davies, Jake Anderson, Sam Masters, and current title holder Mason Campton all of which have gone onto international careers. Locals stars Daniel Winchester, Kale Ballantyne, Glenn Gordon and Co will not give this up without a fight so fireworks are expected as these guys go elbow to elbow.

The Dennis Nash Cup for sidecars will be thrown open to all as former Aussie #1 Russell Mitchell and Tina Karan are unavailable due to other racing commitments on the east coast. The Mitchell/ Karan combination are extremely hard to beat around the tight Pinjar track but this now gives another outfit the chance to take home the silverware.

As in past years proceeds from The Foundation Night event go into the Chum Taylor and Dennis Nash Foundation which in turn helps members for the SMCWA pursue national title meetings throughout the country.

So don't miss the action at Pinjar Park's 2011/12 Season Opener - October 1st, Foundation Night featuring the Chum Taylor(solos) & Dennis Nash (sidecars) Cups plus 250cc solos, junior solos, fast 50's and the biggest group of Pee Wee riders in WA.
