Mitch Evans Breaks Into The Top Ten At the MXGP of Trentino

Mitch Evans battles it out with team-mate Tim Gasjer, who went on to clean sweep the round with a pair of wins.

Mitch Evans has continued his improvement at the fifth round of the 2022 FIM Motocross World Championship at Trentino, Italy for the MXGP of Trentino.

The Pietramurata circuit is one of the most beautiful on the calendar, nestled in the Dolomites Mountain range in Italy, and for the first time in its history, they reversed the layout to give the riders a new challenge for what is the venue’s seventh race in just three years as it carried some of the COVID load with multiple events.

That change didn’t seem to affect Mitch Evans with the Australian showing improvement by leading a good portion of the qualification race on Saturday, after a holeshot, before ending up with the third gate-pick.

The opening moto saw Evans circulate the early part of the moto in fifth. In the later stages, Evans came under intense pressure from this competitive MXGP class and ended up dropping back to 10th. Moto two was a different story with Evans not making such a good start and was down in 13th at the end of lap one. However, he was determined to once again break into the top 10 and achieved that goal with a finishing place of ninth, for an eventual ninth overall.

“While perhaps the end results weren’t as good as I hoped, I am still very positive about how things went this weekend,” Evans said. “I showed in the qualification race, and in moto one today that I have the speed to run with the guys up the front so now I have to put myself in the position to do that regularly. I also have to extend that speed for the full 35 minutes, but I don’t think I’m too far away from that and I’m excited to get to Latvia after another week of work. Thanks to the team for all their help and for helping me make these steps every race.”

Evans will now be back in action in Kegums, Latvia where the sandy surface always provides a stern challenge. This year’s event takes place on April 23-24, giving him a weekend off to get in some good training sessions as he aims to keep up these strong performances for another round.

A highlight for Mitch Evans (43) was leading the Saturday Qualifying race before eventually finishing third.
