Michael Phillips makes his UK debut

Kiwi Michael Phillips had his first outing last weekend in the British MMX championship, also known as the 4 stroke championship that runs at the same meeting as the under 21 and the Ladies championship. Being his first meeting on a 450 he was keen to get as much time on the race track as possible. The hard pack shingly track at little silver motocross park near Devon (southwest of the country) was a little new to him but I was keen to see what my KTM SXS had to offer. Qualifying went alright but he had trouble putting a good lap in. I qualified 7th which gave him a good gate pick. "My first race got off to a good start and I pushed my way into 3rd by the 4th corner, but that‰Ûªs about where it ended," Phillips said. "I slid out on an up hill corner and had to wait for most of the field to go passed before I could get going. I pushed my way thought the pack but the combination of the slippery track and me trying a little too hard let me down. 3 more times actually. I finished the race in a disappointing 12th place." "Race two went better. I got a good start again and got into 4th. I battled with KTM U.K‰Ûªs Alex Rach for most of the race. I backed it off a little and it helped me put the 450 where wanted it. I held out Rach for the rest of the race and finished in 4th. I ended the day in 6th overall" "It was good to get out there and do some racing before the first round of the British motocross champs in two weeks time. I was a little disappointed with the first moto but I learnt a few things and have a few different things to test over the next few weeks. Team manager Nigel Arnold was happy with the weekend despite my first race and is looking forward to having everything set up for the First round of the British Champs in two weeks at Donington Park."
