New Zealand’s Maximus Purvis made a solid debut at the 2025 ProMX Championship opener in Wonthaggi, despite battling through injuries sustained ahead of the season.
Drafted into the CDR Yamaha team after Aaron Tanti’s injury, Purvis entered the Wonthaggi round with rib and shoulder issues and minimal preparation. However, the newly crowned New Zealand MX champion showed his true potential by charging to a strong third-place finish in the opening MX1 moto.
While Purvis wasn’t in contention for the win, with teammate Jed Beaton and Kyle Webster setting the pace at the front, his raw speed and determination were clear as he maintained control over the rest of the field, finishing a solid third.
“The first moto was great,” Purvis said. “I was trying to conserve as much energy as possible, knowing how demanding this track is.”
However, in the second race, the lack of preparation began to take its toll. A poor start forced the 22 years old to battle from the back, and while he made progress, stalling his bike and then falling later in the race put him on the back foot. Despite the setbacks, he fought hard to finish ninth and secure fourth place overall on the day with 3-9 results.
“I was in survival mode for the rest of the race,” he shared. “Fortunately, I didn’t do any more damage to myself, so after a few days off, hopefully, I can get some riding in and work my way back into better shape for the upcoming rounds.”
With a two-week break before the next round in Appin, Purvis is focused on recovering and preparing for the next chapter in his ProMX journey.
