Mary Perkins breaks world record

Posted:

New Zealand's Mary Perkins has set a new world record for the longest motorcycle ramp jump for a female rider at the Bindoon Bike Drag Park. Perkins achieved the record aboard a YZ 250cc 2-Stroke that was supplied by 5 Star Yamaha in South Fremantle, Western Australia. The current Australian Women's Motocross #2 efforts now sees the Guinness Book of Record mark at a distance of 159.4ft, with Perkins over the moon with her achievement. "Firstly, I'd like to thank everyone at Australian Ramp Design and Gitch Racing for all their support and without it this wouldn't have been at all possible," expressed a grateful Perkins. "This is something I've always wanted to do (set a world record) and it was great to jump a big distance. Also, this will hopefully open the door for other females in the freestyle scene that want to try something like this, and it's certainly an awesome feeling to know that you hold a world record." Due to unforeseen circumstances Lisa Irwin was unable to contest this event, and in her place was Rachael Eagle from Gitch Racing, who rode the Doric Motor Racing supported CRF Honda 250cc. Although, unable to better the mark set from Perkins, Eagle was thrilled with the entire experience and in the end her best jump was at a distance of 138ft. "Before this event I had only jumped a ramp on one previous occasion and I was initially hoping that I'd be able to make it pass the 100ft mark," recalled Eagle. "As the day went on I felt a lot more confident and to jump 138ft was something I never expected, but at the same time I'm very happy with it and it has now pushed me to better the mark set by Mary (Perkins) in the near future." Eagle spoke highly of Perkins achievements and believes that she is one of the strongest ambassadors for women's Motocross. "Mary (Perkins) is a wonderful person and an equally talented rider, who has done a lot to help promote women's Motocross on a number of different angle's," said Eagle. "Her recent achievement setting a new world record is going to do wonderful things for women's Motocross and all her success gives hope to everyone out there aspiring to be like her." Both Perkins and Eagle were in appreciation of all the support from the fans that they received throughout their trip to Western Australia, along with their sponsors: the Western Australian Tourism, Vodafone and Gitch Racing, Australian Ramp Design. Special thanks must also go out to the entire Channel Seven crew from the Guinness World of Records television show, which filmed this historic event. "The crowd was very supportive and everyone came out to watch our world record attempts," commented Eagle. "Without the support of our sponsors none of this would have been possible, and special thanks must go out to everyone that helped out during this trip." Early next year will see Perkins and Eagle's attempts broadcast in the new series of the Guinness Book of Records on Channel Seven that is hosted by Grant Denyer.
