Malaysia Out, Sweden In as World Supercross Adds Stockholm Round

Posted:

The 2025 FIM World Supercross Championship has dropped its planned Malaysian opener after organisers failed to meet requirements, with Sweden stepping in to host a new penultimate round in Stockholm on 6 December.

The 2025 FIM World Supercross Championship is set to make a welcome return to Europe later this year, with Stockholm confirmed to host the Swedish GP on 6 December.

The update to the season calendar comes after Kuala Lumpur’s Stadium Merdeka was withdrawn as the season opener. While organisers expressed disappointment that the Malaysian promoter was unable to meet the requirements to host the event or secure an alternative venue, the addition of Sweden ensures the series retains its full five-round, five-continent schedule and strengthens its global presence.

The 2025 season will now launch in Buenos Aires on 8 November, before heading to Vancouver, the Gold Coast in Australia, Stockholm, and finally Cape Town for the season finale.

World Supercross CEO Tom Burwell said the new stop adds excitement to the series: “We are thrilled to confirm that our season will head back to Europe, and in particular to Sweden, a country with a passion for two-wheeled motorsport. The Swedish GP will be a fantastic addition to the Championship and the ideal setting for the penultimate round.”

Burwell admitted frustration with the situation in Malaysia but praised the way the Championship responded. “We were let down at this late stage by the Stadium Merdeka, despite the significant time, investment, and commitment that went into bringing world-class supercross to Malaysia for the very first time. Thanks to the relentless work of our team and the backing of our partners, we’ve turned disappointment into momentum. Sweden completes a five-round Championship across five continents in 2025, ahead of what is shaping up to be our biggest season yet.”

FIM President Jorge Viegas also welcomed the move, emphasising the Championship’s resilience and growth. “The FIM World Supercross Championship continues to grow as a truly global competition, and we welcome the addition of Sweden to the 2025 calendar. While it is always unfortunate when local circumstances prevent an event from proceeding as planned, the resilience shown by World Supercross and its partners ensures that riders, teams, and fans will still enjoy an outstanding season across five continents. The FIM remains fully committed to supporting the Championship and its long-term success.”

With Stockholm locked in for December, the stage is set for a truly global showdown as the 2025 World Supercross Championship plays out across South America, North America, Oceania, Europe, and Africa.
