Makeham aiming for race wins after second podium of 2013 season

Posted:

Twenty-year-old Kale Makeham from Koondrook continued his dream run in his rookie year in the Pro Lites class at the 2013 Monster Energy Drink MX Nationals last weekend at Wonthaggi (5 May).

The 2013 ten round season started at Raymond Terrace, New South Wales, in April, and since then has travelled Murray Bridge in South Australia, and Wonthaggi in Victoria, with round four scheduled for Broadford, Victoria May 19.

In the past three rounds Makeham has made it on the podium twice, and is eager to consistently stay on the podium now he has had a taste.

Successful starts are the key to motorcross racing and Makeham has had near perfect reaction times, by timing when the gate drops to opening the throttle and releasing the clutch, putting in the lead pack and following the race pace.

In moto one, after a perfect start the Victorian was out in front setting the pace, a great achievement for his rookie year in the class. Factory Serco Yamaha team riders Luke Styke and Luke Clout chased him down, relegating Makeham to third position by race end.

Makeham's start was superb once again in moto two, placing him the lead group. After a disastrous first moto factory Honda's Josh Cachia was eager to prove his ability setting the pace and going on to win the race.

The Serco Yamaha team rounded out the the top three placings as Makeham fought off seasoned MX2 rider, Raceline Pirelli Suzuki's Ryan Marmont for fourth place, once again finishing as the lead KTM racers and highest ranked two stroke pilot.

‰ÛÏWonthaggi was a great day for me. I was a bit bitter after missing the podium by 1 position at round 2, so I was really determined to come out and prove I'm a top 3 guy." said a confident Kale Makemham.

"I came out swinging in race one and lead my first laps in the lites class." Makeham explained. "Other then a bit of lack in experience, I felt really good and was super fast and solid.

"I wasn't able to win it, but knowing what I know now I believe I have it in me to run up front and push for race wins. I learnt a lot on the weekend and we'll take that into the rest of the series," he continued.

"It's always good to be on the podium and thank my sponsors, Steve Jones has been working around the clock for me and has my Tunetech racing KTM on point, along with all my other sponsors I've got a great team around me and we're all looking forward to round 4."

Makeham is currently third overall in the 2013 Monster Energy MX Nationals obtaining 170 points. Leading the series is Serco Yamaha's Luke Styke on 202 points and his team mate Luke Clout is in second place on 184 points.

The next round of the 2013 Monster Energy MX Nationals, round 4, will be held at Victoria's State Motorcycling Complex, Broadford on May 19.
