Luke Burkhart back in action with a win

Posted:

Luke Burkhart has returned to the track with a win in his first race back from sitting out the last 3 months with a thumb injury. Burkhart was happy with his first outing and told Fullnoise that he was really glad to just be back out there. "I can't explain how good it feels after over three months away from the sport! The drive and focus has never been there for me even close to how it is right now," he enthused. "I have been working super hard over the last month with rehab and strengthening stuff on my thumb, as you can imagine it was really weak and i lost a lot of muscle not only in my thumb but my whole upper body left side. I got on to a few cool little gadgets that helped build everything back up surprisingly fast. I've been in the gym almost everyday even when i was still in cast working on my base cardio fitness, it seems to have done its job as the transition back into riding has been easier than i was anticipating. "I had two low key ride sessions last week and felt good enough already that i decided to head over to Taupo to race a round of their winter series, a lot of the top NZ guys ride those races so i wasn't expecting anything special from myself. After blowing the race cobwebs out it ended up being a successful day with no major dramas coming from my thumb, i even pulled the holeshot in the main race of the day against all the 450cc guys on my stock standard Suzuki 250F, then pulled away for a comfortable win to finish the day off. "I'm now putting all my training into riding the bike everyday i can and am hoping to race every weekend until the first round of the New Zealand Championships on September 28-29th in Timaru. I don't think ill be at 100% for the first round but if i can keep building i think i won't be far off. I want this championship bad and I'm going to do whatever it takes to make it happen."
