The 2025 MXGP season kicked off in Cordoba, Argentina, where Lucas Coenen made his much-anticipated MXGP class debut.
The 2024 MX2 runner-up stepped up to the KTM 450 SX-F for the first time in Grand Prix competition and delivered a consistent 7-8 moto score, securing 6th overall at the brand-new Infinito Race Track.
Coenen’s transition to MXGP wasn’t without its challenges. A source close to the situation confirmed that he suffered an off-season crash, leading to injuries in both forearms. Medical examinations in Italy reportedly identified the injuries as fractures to the crest of the radii in both arms, near the wrists. Though initial rumors suggested more severe damage, the young Belgian was able to recover in time for the season opener.
For Coenen, Round 1 was about adapting to the premier class. The Belgian faced a tough Qualifying Race after early contact with another rider sent him to the ground in Turn 2. Despite the setback, he fought back to finish 19th. On race day, Coenen found more rhythm, battling through the field in both motos to score solid top-ten results. His 7-8 finishes gave him 27 championship points to start his MXGP career on the right foot.

“My first MXGP race was quite tricky,” the 18-year-old reflected. “I didn’t have the best feeling on the track or the best speed but managed a good start in the Quali race until another rider ran into my leg and put me down. I had to fight hard to come back from last to 19th and that was tough. I reset for Sunday and did my best. I finished in the top ten twice and I’m really pleased. It’s almost like a win for me right now, and we made some good points. We’ll keep building and swing even higher for Spain.”
With Round 1 complete, Coenen now turns his attention to the next stop on the MXGP calendar: the Grand Prix of Castilla la Mancha in Cozar, Spain, in two weeks’ time. With a solid debut under his belt and his pre-season injury behind him, the Red Bull KTM rider is eager to keep progressing and push further up the leaderboard.
