Round four of the 2026 FIM Motocross World Championship fired into life under warm sunshine at the iconic Il Ciclamino circuit in Pietramurata, with packed hillsides at the foot of the Dolomites setting the scene for a technical and unpredictable day of qualifying action across both classes.
Despite a difficult start to the day, Lucas Coenen turned things around when it counted, charging to victory in the MXGP Qualifying Race. He was pushed all the way by Tom Vialle, while Andrea Adamo gave the home crowd something to cheer about with third place, matching his best Qualifying result of the season.
In MX2, it was business as usual for Sacha Coenen, who made it five Qualifying Race wins from five starts in 2026. The Belgian extended his perfect Saturday record, finishing just over three seconds clear of Guillem Farres, with championship leader Simon Langenfelder completing the top three after a late-race charge.
MXGP
The Trentino circuit’s slick hard-pack base with a loose top layer proved a real test, demanding precision and control, with conditions expected to deteriorate further for Sunday’s races.
Practice sessions showed just how tight the MXGP field is this season, with lap times very tight across the board. Honda HRC Petronas set the early benchmark, as Jeffrey Herlings throwing down a late flyer to top Free Practice ahead of Vialle and Romain Febvre.
Time Practice was even closer with the lead constantly changing and the top 12 riders covered by less than a second. This time it was a Honda 1-2-3, led by Ruben Fernandez ahead of Herlings and Vialle, while Coenen could only manage ninth and was visibly frustrated.

That frustration didn’t last long. When the gate dropped for the Qualifying Race, Coenen launched to the front in a drag race with Adamo, quickly taking control of the race. Vialle slotted in behind, while Fernandez briefly moved into third before Adamo reclaimed the position, only for the Spaniard to crash and drop down the order.
Herlings had a tough opening lap, starting outside the top 10 before charging to fifth, only to crash at the end of Pit Lane and fall to 21st. He remounted and salvaged ninth by the finish. Febvre fared worse, retiring early with a mechanical issue.
Out front, Coenen managed the tricky conditions to perfection, with Vialle shadowing him throughout but unable to mount a serious challenge. Behind them, Kay de Wolf rode a measured race to fourth, while Tim Gajser secured fifth.

Further back, Mattia Guadagnini impressed on home soil with seventh, holding off a late charge from Frenchman Maxime Renaux, who recovered from a poor start to take eighth. Herlings’ late push saw him climb to ninth, ahead of Andrea Bonacorsi, who picked up his first championship point of the season.
Coenen’s win extended his championship lead to 22 points over Herlings, with Vialle now just nine points further back. Reflecting on his turnaround, Coenen admitted, “As you could see, I struggled a lot in time practice. I didn’t find any flow, and the track was really sketchy, which is not the kind of condition I like. I just focused on staying up front and not making mistakes, and I managed to win, so that’s positive. Tomorrow we have two more races, so let’s keep going!”

Vialle was satisfied with a second after a strong start proved crucial, explaining, “I had a great start, so that was important. We all know it’s really tough to pass, so that made the difference. I was behind Lucas the whole race and tried to stay close, but in the end I had to settle for second.”
Adamo, meanwhile, was pleased to deliver for the home fans, saying, “That’s what we needed. I almost had a holeshot in the first corner but lost a position to Tom and Lucas. I tried to follow them, but it was easy to make a difference. I’m happy with it, it was a solid race and a good way to start the weekend.”

MX2
In MX2, the story was once again Sacha Coenen, who grabbed the holeshot and controlled the race from the front to maintain his flawless Saturday record.
Behind him, Farres rode strongly in second but couldn’t quite close the gap, while Längenfelder recovered mid-race to pass Valerio Lata and secure third after a late charge.
The opening laps saw plenty of action, with Lata briefly splitting Farres and Langenfelder, while Liam Everts ran up front early before dropping back. Further down the order, Camden McLellan endured a heavy crash while battling inside the top group, eventually finishing well outside the points.

Farres held firm under pressure from Langenfelder in the closing laps, crossing the line just two-tenths ahead, while Sacha Coenen cruised to another convincing win. Despite Langenfelder maintaining the championship lead, it was trimmed slightly to 22 points as Coenen continues to dominate Saturdays.
Speaking after the race, Coenen admitted it wasn’t straightforward despite the result. “Five out of five is really nice. I didn’t feel so good on the track, and this morning I was not there. I tried to be really smooth at the beginning and didn’t have a great pace, but in the middle, I found my rhythm and could make a gap. In the last laps, the front started to go away a bit, so I just focused on bringing it home. To win again is good.”
Conditions are expected to worsen for Sunday’s racing at Trentino.
