Kirk Gibbs In Good Nick For Wonthaggi

Posted:

KTM Motocross Racing Team rider Kirk Gibbs comes to the Victorian circuit of Wonthaggi for this weekend's third round of the Monster Energy MX Nationals series in his best shape so far.

Gibbs, who broke the knuckle of his right ‰Û÷pinky‰Ûª finger at the final round of the New Zealand motocross Championships in late March, says the effect on his riding is now next to nil, and he looks forward to the challenge of the tough Wonthaggi track.

Gibbs gave himself a stern test last weekend, competing in the three-day Queensland Motocross Championships at a Coolum track some described as the roughest they‰Ûªd ever seen.

In the MX Nationals championship, the Queensland-based South Australian has made an excellent start and currently lies second in the championship, 20 points in arrears of defending champion Matt Moss.

‰ÛÏI rode the Queensland titles last weekend which was a three-day event, and some good positives came out of it." Gibbs explained. "I was second overall - only just, but it was really good to get that bike time and race time behind me.

"My starts were really good too, which was positive.

"The hand I injured in New Zealand is pretty good now, it still hurts to clench a first, but not to ride. I'm feeling really good on the bike now but I haven't done much this week, I‰Ûªm just trying to be really fresh for the weekend.

"I‰Ûªm focussing on my starts this time because they really held me back at Appin. So I'll go there and try my best and hopefully it will work out for the best.‰Û

In MX2 Racing, Hamish Harwood leads the Orange Brigade in second place, just two points ahead of Brenden Harrison, who had an up and down day at Appin on the Instant Security KTM.

‰ÛÏPhysically I‰Ûªm the best I've been coming into this round." Harrison confirmed. "I didn't ride for a week before and after Appin because of a crash, but now I'm really looking forward to running the two-stroke on a soft terrain track.

"I'm going there hoping to win, and chasing three good starts. I've been working very hard, but I need some starts because I know what that'll bring me. There's a lot of depth in our class and not having to come through for 20 minutes makes a big difference.‰Û
