King and Cooper still lead NZ Motocross Nationals

Posted:

Local riders including former World Champion Shayne King (Honda) and the now internationally capped Cody Cooper, were out to prove their worth at Round 3 of the 2005 SsangYong New Zealand Motocross Championship, held at Barrett Road Motocross Park in New Plymouth last Sunday (Oct-16).

Competitors had a mixed weekend being tested not only be the demanding track, described by some as the toughest in New Zealand, but also the weather conditions which went from wet to dusty. Riders who had dominated at the first two rounds were pushed to the limits. In the National 125cc class Yamaha's Damien King became only the second rider to win a moto this season after he accounted for the previously un-beaten NZ Motocross of Nations representative Cody Cooper. Cooper, who was aboard the 2006 twin muffler CRF250, won the other two races which gave him the overall on the day and enough points to retain his championship lead. Kawasaki mounted Michael Cotter, a previous New Zealand Champion, had a consistent day to finish third behind King, and in so doing notched up his first podium for the season. In the National 250cc class Honda's Shayne King accounted for his closest rival Luke Burkhart and now takes an 11 point lead in the championship. Michael Phillips backed up his podium performance from round two when he finished third and is now making some headway after a disappointing start to the Championship. After the withdrawal of Daryl Hurley with injury the National 500cc class was going to have a new leader by the end of the day. Wellington's Corrie Sargent, out-paced his Honda team-mate Shayne King to win the day by a slender 3 points, however King now holds the overall points lead. Local veteran rider Mitch Rowe (Kawasaki) took the third place for the round.
