Kenan Sofuoglu Claims His First World Supersport Win Of 2014

Posted:

A typically close World Supersport race in the Spanish sun resulted in Kenan Sofuoglu claiming his first win of the season aboard his Kawasaki.

In the early stages a group of six riders swapped places with Australia winner Jules Cluzel (MV Agusta RC ‰ÛÒ Yakhnnich Motorsport) claiming a lap record in the process.

As the race continued the leading group split with Michael van der Mark (Pata Honda World Supersport Team), former Champion Kenan Sofuoglu (Mahi India Kawasaki Team), and Cluzel joining Kev Coghlan (DMC Panavto-Yamaha) in the battle for the victory.

Lap 12 saw Cluzel and Coghlan collide at the end of the back straight resulting in both riders crashing, with Coghlan the only one able to restart. The incident handed Sofuoglu a comfortable lead over Van Der Mark who slowed as the riders ahead fell.

Florian Marino (Kawasaki Intermoto Ponyexpres) claiming the final podium position.

Coghlan regrouped to finish 5th despite his late fall and left round two as the Supersport championship leader.

‰ÛÏIn the beginning of the weekend we had so many problems but I found out my real speed this morning in the warm up." Sofuoglu explained. "I knew I would be ready to fight in the race.

"When we started the race everybody was doing incredible attacks under braking. Going into the hairpin I watched them and I was just scared, so I took it easy. Before reaching the last five laps I thought would wait because I thought somebody would crash with all the big overtakes going on. When it did not happen and we got to the last five laps I thought I should go.

"Then one of them made a mistake, which I was expecting. When two of the other riders collided and crashed it made it easier for me as I did not have to pass them and I could control the race.

"The team, my suspension man, my mechanic, crew chief, they all worked really hard, so a big thanks to them. Also to the people around me, who really support me to win this race. Thanks to everybody who helped me to win today because I really needed it.‰Û
