Ken Roczen Closes Title Gap as Nate Thrasher Takes 250 East Win At Cleveland Supercross

Ken Roczen delivered a consistent 2-2-1 performance to take the overall win and close to within one point of the championship lead.

For the first time in three decades, the AMA Supercross Championship returned to Cleveland, where Huntington Bank Field was hit with cold temperatures, rain showers and swirling winds for Round 14 of the 2026 Championship.

The conditions played a major role across both classes, with the championship picture in the 450SMX Class taking another dramatic twist as Ken Roczen delivered a standout Triple Crown performance to close the gap to the title lead.

The Progressive Insurance Cycle Gear Suzuki rider produced one of the most consistent nights of the season, going 2-2-1 across the three races to secure his fourth win of the year. That result sees Roczen move to within a single point of the championship lead, in a season that has now become a tight two-rider fight after a difficult afternoon for current leader Hunter Lawrence and the absence of Eli Tomac.

Tomac’s day unravelled early after a heavy crash in the whoops during the first qualifying session. Although initial reports suggested no broken bones, he was later ruled out of the remainder of the event due to ongoing hip pain. He had entered the round second in the standings, 15 points behind Lawrence and five ahead of Roczen, but now drops to fourth in the championship, 31 points adrift.

The first of the three 12 Minutes + 1 Lap races set the tone for a volatile afternoon. Lawrence grabbed the holeshot and quickly established control of the race over Justin Cooper and Roczen. With clean air ahead, Lawrence built a margin that would hold to the finish, taking a 5.4-second win over Roczen, with Cooper third.

Race 2 delivered more chaos as light rain and wind made conditions even more treacherous. Cooper took the holeshot, while Roczen gradually worked his way forward through an intense midfield battle. The German rider eventually moved into second and applied pressure on Cooper, but the Yamaha rider held firm to take a wire-to-wire win by two seconds. Roczen again finished second, with Chase Sexton third and Cooper Webb fourth. Lawrence recovered from a mid-pack start to finish fifth.

Cooper Webb rebounded from a tough opening race to secure second overall and strengthen his position in the title fight.

By Race 3, Roczen had momentum and made it count immediately, taking the holeshot and controlling the race from the front. From there, he never looked back, opening a gap and eventually taking an 8.7-second victory over Webb. A late pass from Justin Hill moved him into third ahead of Sexton, while Cooper recovered to seventh after an earlier crash.

The final result reflected Roczen’s consistency across all three motos, giving him the overall win with 2-2-1 finishes and 27th career Supercross victory, moving him into a tie for 10th on the all-time wins list. Webb (5-4-2) and Cooper (3-1-7) finished tied for second overall on 11 points, with Webb taking the tiebreaker thanks to the final race result.

Justin Cooper claimed a race win but a crash in the final moto dropped him to third overall.

Lawrence’s inconsistent day ultimately cost him significant ground in the title fight. His 1-5-14 scorecard placed him sixth overall on 20 points, and his championship lead has now been reduced to just a single point over Roczen with three rounds remaining.

With Tomac sidelined and Webb now 22 points off the lead in third, the championship is shaping into a direct battle between Lawrence and Roczen heading into the final stretch.

Roczen was stunned by the shift in the standings after the event, admitting he had no idea how close things were. “Wow. I had no idea I was one point back,” Roczen said. “I am so blown away with the gamble we took with the weather. It was supposed to be clear for the last two races, but it kept raining. That affected my decision with goggles, and I kept sticking with roll-offs just to be safe. After I got the holeshot in the last race, I had a clear track and just felt really comfortable. Once I had a gap, I just made sure I didn’t do anything silly. I’m just so grateful I’m able to ride like this.”

Hunter Lawrence endured a difficult night in Cleveland with a crash-filled final race that dropped him to sixth overall, reducing his championship lead to just one point over Ken Roczen.

Webb continued his strong late-season form with a second consecutive runner-up finish. “What a crazy day. Qualifying was great, then the rain came, and we had the Triple Crown,” Webb said. “I rode badly in the first race but got better for the last two. I didn’t think I had a chance for the podium after the first two, so I rode free in the last one. Kenny rode those first laps like it was dry and got away. I was a distant second. Overall, I’m happy with it. We had a good day.”

Justin Cooper added another podium after a race win, despite a crash that could have ended his night early. “This track was very tricky, and things could go wrong very quickly,” Cooper said. “I’m happy to get up from the crash unscathed, the concrete hurt. Just glad to be up on the podium still [despite the crash]. I spun off the gate but somehow came out top five and then had that crash. It was a bummer to go down and give away a spot [overall] but just thankful I’m okay. It was still a great night.”

Lawrence was blunt after a difficult final race that cost him dearly in the standings. “I had a bad start and just made it tough on myself,” Lawrence said. “Another rider checked up, and I went down. It was a bit of a [expletive] night at the office. We’ll come back next weekend in Philly.”

Nate Thrasher used strong consistency across all three races to secure his first win of the season and seventh of his career.

250 East

In the 250SMX Eastern Divisional Class, Nate Thrasher claimed victory after a dramatic three-race showdown that saw multiple race winners and a shifting order across the podium.

Cole Davies set qualifying pace, while Seth Hammaker showed matching speed, but it was Thrasher who ultimately emerged with the overall win after a 2-1-4 scorecard. The result marked his first win of the season and extended Yamaha Star Racing’s dominance in the category, with the team now holding 13 wins this year across multiple riders.

The first of three 10 Minutes + 1 Lap races began with points leader Cole Davies lining up alongside his Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing teammate Nate Thrasher, the pair exiting the first turn at the front of the field. Davies initially grabbed the holeshot, but quickly gave way to Thrasher and soon dropped to third behind Seth Hammaker, his championship rival.

Davies regrouped and found his rhythm, clawing back into second to pass Hammaker and then closing in on Thrasher for the race lead. The Yamaha teammates then engaged in a tight battle at the front until Davies went down, the New Zealander remounting quickly and rejoining in sixth position.

Out front, Thrasher came under pressure from Hammaker, who bided his time before making the pass for the lead. Once in control, Hammaker pulled away to take the Race 1 win by 4.2 seconds over Thrasher, with Daxton Bennick finishing third. Landen Gordon took fourth, while Davies fought back through the field and survived another near crash to salvage fifth with a last-lap move.

A rain shower intensified the challenge for Race 2, which was initially halted by a red flag following a first-lap crash involving Davies and required a full restart. When racing resumed, Gordon launched to his first career holeshot and led briefly before giving way to Thrasher.

Davies charged forward to third, positioning himself ahead of Hammaker in the championship fight, with the pair soon locked in battle for position. Hammaker made an initial pass, only for Davies to strike back, before the Kawasaki rider reclaimed the position again just before the final lap in a tense exchange.

Up front, Thrasher controlled the race from the moment he took the lead, cruising to a 3.7-second win over Gordon. Hammaker held firm for third ahead of Davies, while Bennick completed the top five.

The third and final race began with Davies again launching to the holeshot, this time ahead of Gordon, while chaos unfolded further back. Thrasher started deep in the top 10, and Hammaker was immediately set back after contact with teammate Nick Romano, going down and remounting at the tail of the field.

Davies capitalised on a clear track to build a multi-second lead as Gordon settled into second. Thrasher worked his way forward early, climbing into podium position, but later dropped to fourth as Bennick moved ahead. Hammaker, meanwhile, steadily climbed through the field, breaking into the top 10 mid-race.

Cole Davies overcame multiple setbacks to finish third overall and extend his championship lead.

Davies controlled the race through the difficult conditions to take the win by 2.6 seconds over Gordon, with Bennick third and Thrasher fourth. ClubMX Yamaha’s Devin Simonson finished fifth, while Hammaker completed a strong recovery ride in sixth.

Thrasher’s 2-1-4 results delivered him the overall victory on seven points, marking the seventh win of his career and extending his record of at least one Supercross win in every professional season since 2021. The result also continued Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s remarkable run in the class, with Thrasher becoming the fifth different rider from the team to win in the 250SMX category this season, contributing to a total of 13 victories—just one shy of the manufacturer record.

Gordon secured second overall, finishing just one point behind Thrasher with 4-2-2 scores, while Davies completed an all-Yamaha Star Racing podium sweep in third with 5-4-1 finishes. Hammaker (1-3-6) ended tied on points with Davies but was classified fourth on the Race 3 tiebreaker.

Despite a difficult final race, Davies extended his lead in the Eastern Divisional Championship to 21 points over Hammaker with two rounds remaining. Bennick’s consistent 3-5-5 results secured fifth overall and strengthened his hold on third in the standings, now 43 points from the lead.

Race winner Nate Thrasher was pleased to bounce back to the top step after a disrupted build-up to the season, highlighting steady progression through the day. “It’s awesome [to be on top of the podium]. The offseason was unreal, honestly. I felt like I was going to be able to contend for the championship but had a little mishap [and injured his shoulder]. That’s part of it, though. We’ve done what we can–fourth [place], second [place], and now first. We’re trending [upward] and it feels good to be back up here.”

Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Landen Gordon produced a breakout performance to claim second overall in just his second career start, admitting the result was hard to process. “If you would have told me after last weekend [finishing last] I’d be sitting on the podium, that’d be unbelievable. I’ve put in so much work into this. I’m backed by the best team, so I expect this, but it’s truly unbelievable. I have no words. I’m sure it’ll sink in, but right now I’m in shock.”

Points leader Cole Davies rounded out the podium in third after a tough but resilient day that still delivered solid championship damage limitation. “It was a rough day, but we still managed a podium. I didn’t give up and fought through. Just reset for the last [race] and got the win. It is what it is. Congrats to my teammates, they were riding good.”

With three rounds remaining, the championship now heads to Philadelphia next weekend.
