Kay de Wolf has reignited his MX2 championship campaign with a gutsy third overall at the 2025 MXGP of Germany, as the Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing rider showed grit and determination to bounce back from a string of challenging rounds.

De Wolf opened the season with blistering form, quickly stamping his authority on the class and taking the early championship lead. But a run of mistakes and misfortune saw him slip from the top spot, despite often having the speed to challenge for wins. In Teutschenthal, however, the 20-year-old reminded everyone why he’s considered a title favourite.

“Honestly, it was a really tough weekend,” de Wolf admitted. “I took a hard hit earlier in the event which made things more difficult, but I just kept digging deep and didn’t give up. Saturday wasn’t ideal, and I had to work hard in the first moto to come through the pack. Then the rain before the second race completely changed the track—it was like riding a totally different circuit. But I managed a strong start and rode smart in the mud to bring it home in second, which gave me the podium overall.”

After salvaging seventh in the opening moto with a charge from outside the top ten, de Wolf came alive in the second moto as a mid-afternoon downpour turned the Talkessel circuit into a slick, treacherous mess. He pounced on the chaos, climbing into the top three on the opening lap and keeping it tidy to finish second, securing third overall with 7-2 scores.

It was a performance full of maturity from the Dutchman, who now sits third in the championship standings, just 31 points adrift of the red plate as the series heads into its second half.

With the MXGP of Latvia up next on June 8, de Wolf is carrying momentum and confidence, having shown he can weather the storm—literally and figuratively—and still deliver under pressure.
