Joe Harvey takes on a UK Supermoto adventure

Posted:

Joe Harvey (18) from Rosebud , Victoria made the trip to the UK for the month of July to compete in three rounds of the British Supermoto Championship. In the 2005 Australian S3 Championships he was 3rd and 4th in 2006 so he felt ready to take the challenge.

In the first meeting at Lydden Hill in Kent, the pattern was set for the month when practise and qualifying were held nearly underwater in a deluge of British rain. Riding the Aprilia Lincoln / Stratton Motorsports SXV 550 for the first time in these conditions he was happy to qualify 27th of 28 . The next day proved just as unpredictable and changing bikes between the SXV550 and the 450 saw him finish 19th in race 3. A fortnight later he travelled North to the Teesside Autodrome near Middlesborough where practise and qualifying were in the dry giving him some time to feel the way the bikes worked. His times on Saturday went up to 10th before finally qualifying 20th. But it was the final race on the Sunday in an absolute downpour that he showed them Aussies don't mind the rain, battling with some of the top names in British Supermoto, he crossed the line ninth. He was actually fourth 450, a formidable result. For his last weekend Wigan beckoned and the Three Sisters Circuit with the largest crowd we'd seen yet. Although entries in the British Championship were capped , all the other classes were packed out... a popular venue. After the Teesside result we were pumped for better but it was not to be, a minor bike problem saw him back on the 450 again for race two but having to start from the back of the grid meant he could only manage 21st . Putting his all into the last race gave us some great racing but it ended up being red flagged due to an incident and he was credited 20th. (Ninth in 450 class) For the incredible experience he would like to thank Shane Stratton from Stratton Motorsports, who has actually shipped the bikes to Australia to compete in the 2007 Australian Championships. However, due to pressure from his last few months in school , Joe has decided to miss these Championships, concentrate on passing year 12 and return to Supermoto at Calder Park on November 24th.
